MIDDLEBURY — Bernard Leslie Stewart, 83, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at Helen Porter Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center
He was born Sept. 25, 1925, in Hardwick, the son of the late Leon and Ella (Newton) Stewart.
He attended schools in Hardwick and Greensboro.
He worked as a machine operator for Kraft Foods for many years. After his retirement he took on the position of custodian at Middlebury Congregational Church for the last ten years.
His family and home were his life.
He was a United States Army veteran serving from 1954 to 1956.
Bernard is survived by his wife Ruth (Sawyer) Stewart of Middlebury; his two sons, Burt Stewart and his wife Bobbi of Ferrisburgh, and Jim Stewart and his wife Linda of Middlebury; his grandchildren, Heather Thomas and her husband Jeff of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Kelly and Sarah Stewart of Middlebury; his two sisters-in-law, Jean Stewart of Greensboro and Vera Stewart of Bradenton, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents, four brothers and one sister.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the Middlebury Congregational Church. The Rev. Jonathan New will officiate. Burial will follow in Weybridge Cemetery.
