BRIDPORT — Ella Emma Smith, 85 died Friday, July 3, 2009, at Helen Porter Health and Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury. A complete obituary will appear in a future edition of the Independent.
Arrangements are pending at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.
CORNWALL — Susan Kennedy Brande, 83, died early Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at her home in Cornwall.
She was born in Port Chester, N.Y., on July 28, 1925, the daughter of Leonard and Angela (Mitchell) Kennedy.
She grew up in Rye, N.Y., where she received her early education. She was graduated from Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, Conn., and earned her bachelor’s degree in art from Smith College, class of 1947.
She married Justin Herbert Brande in Wonalancet, N.H., on Oct. 9, 1948. They moved to Vermont and purchased a dairy farm in Cornwall in 1951.
She was a wife, mother and homemaker and assisted her husband on the family farm. She enjoyed her gardening, knitting, volunteer work and was an avid reader. She belonged to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Middlebury.
She is survived by four sons, Justin C. Brande of Cornwall, Frederick Brande of Bristol, Conn., Thomas Brande of Vergennes and Herbert Brande of Long Beach, Calif.; four daughters, Dorothea Pratt of Rutland, Susan Price of Monroe, N.H., Angela Brande of Weybridge, and Hilary Giaccardi of the Principality of Monaco; a son-at-heart, Abdul-alim Issa of Philadelphia; 22 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband on April 11, 2000, and by two sisters Joan Behr and Angela Sladen.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Middlebury, and the Rev. William Beaudin, pastor, will officiate. A private burial will take place at a later date.
