ADDISON COUNTY — Residents across Addison County and Brandon this morning are coping with the massive amount of water that the remnants of Hurricane Irene dumped on Vermont over the weekend.

State roads — including parts of Routes 7, 30, 22A, 116, 125 and 17 —  were closed for a time on Sunday and into Monday, as well as local roads in many communities. In New Haven, the Nash Bridge on River Road was closed due to water being over the bridge, and a part of River Road in Bristol was also closed for a time.

Numerous roads in Lincoln, including River Road above Bartlett Falls, were closed. The detour leads motorists up Briggs Hill Road.

Thousands of utility customers lost power at some point during the storm. At about 10 a.m. Monday, CVPS was reporting 2,518 outages in Addison County and Green Mountain Power was reporting 91. CVPS said more than 811 Lincoln customers — most of the town — were without power. The town of New Haven was listed as having more than 500 customers without power; Cornwall and Ripton had 151-500 customers without electricity, and most other towns in the county had many outages.

Middlebury College reported 3.21 inches of rain with maximum winds there clocked at 37 mph. Rainfalls elsewhere were believed to be even higher. A Cornwall resident reported 4.5 inches at his rain gauge.

Many residents of East Main Street in East Middlebury were urged by public safety officials to evacuate their homes and businesses on Sunday afternoon. A Red Cross shelter was established in the Middlebury municipal gym on Sunday. The shelter closed at around 10 p.m. on Sunday after waters started receding.

Ripton officials said pavement and/or guardrail was washed out at three locations of Route 125 between East Middlebury and Ripton. Engineers were set to come in on Monday to assess the damage and draft repair plans. Traffic in and out of Ripton was diverted through the Dugway Road and North Branch Road.

Route 7 between Lake Dunmore Road and Route 116 in East Middlebury was covered with water Sunday evening and the road was closed. Flooding was also bad in Brandon, where Route 7 was reported flooded from McConnel Road in the south all the way to Route 73 in the village. Route 73 from Brandon village east to Route 100 was closed due to a wash out.

In Bristol, Carlstrom Road was reported flooded and Route 116 near the south end of that road was damaged and reduced to one lane of travel this morning. Residents who used the Bristol municipal water were ordered to boil water before consuming it as a precaution. The contact tank was contaminated with flood water. Officials said Bristol residents should boil their water for five minutes before drinking it, and they urged people to go easy on water usage. Official said that in the best case scenario, the order would last until Wednesday.

In Lincoln, many roads in addition to the River Road were closed and 50 feet of South Lincoln Road were washed out. They hope to have South Lincoln Road open by the end of Monday. The bridge that connects Hall Road and Robbinson Road was washed out.

Despite three to four feet of water pressing on Burnham Hall, the building was not damaged.

Damage was reported on Route 17 by Memorial Park in South Starksboro. Route 17 was closed from Route 116 to Huntington Road.

In Orwell and Shoreham, Route 22A was closed between Routes 73 and 74.

In Hancock, Route 125 is closed at Route 100 due to a bridge washout.
