Vermont State Police Log: Ultralight plane crashes, minor injuries

ADDISON COUNTY — On Sunday at about 1:20 p.m. Vermont State Police responded to a report of a downed aircraft near Brown Road and Lewis Road in Shoreham.

The pilot of the ultralight airplane, Donald S. Arnold, 56, of Shoreham, told Trooper Cathy Cappetta that he was up in the air for approximately six to seven minutes before he lost control of the aircraft and it crashed in a field near his home. Cappetta described Arnold as an experienced pilot.

Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association and the Shoreham Fire Department and Rescue Squad also responded to the scene. Arnold was taken to Porter Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Meanwhile, VSP out of the New Haven barracks are investigating two incidents of car vandalism.

A Leicester resident reported vandalism to a motor vehicle that was parked for sale on Route 7 in Leicester. The vandalism occurred between 5 p.m. on Oct. 17 and 5 p.m. on Oct. 18. Anyone with information is urged to contact VSP at 802-388-4919.

Separately, troopers on Oct. 21 at 8:33 a.m. were called to investigate vandalism to a 1999 Pontiac Grand AM that was reportedly scratched with a key while parked overnight in Monkton. The approximate value of the damage is $900. Anyone with information is asked to contact the VSP New Haven barracks at 1-802-388-4919.

In other recent activity, VSP:

  On Oct. 12 stopped a car on Route 22A in Vergennes. After investigation, police cited passenger Renee L. Little, 18, of Burlington for possession of marijuana.

  On Oct. 18 at about 5:15 p.m. stopped a Dodge truck on Old Hollow Road in Ferrisburgh for failure to drive to the right. Police charged Timmy G. Farr, 58, of Ferrisburgh for driving with a criminally suspended license.

  On Oct. 21 at approximately 7 a.m. stopped a car driven by Robert Michael Dinapoli, 43, of Bristol on Town Hill Road in New Haven for driving with defective equipment. Troopers later cited Dinapoli for driving with a criminally suspended license.

  On Oct. 21 at 1:40 p.m. responded to a crash in which a 2002 CMC Safari van traveling north on Route 30 in Cornwall had left the blacktop about 0.2 miles north of Clark Road and struck a utility pole, knocking out power to some area customers. No one was injured, but the van sustained damage to its front end, hood and right side.

The driver, Isaac Doughty, 18, of Brooklyn, N.Y., told police that he had been driving four and a half hours from New York City on his way to Burlington and he had fallen asleep at the wheel. CVPS responded, replaced the utility pole and restored power to the area.

  On Oct. 21 at 5:39 p.m. were called to a one-vehicle accident on Route 30 in Whiting. Police said investigation revealed that driver Katherine Ferguson of Whiting swerved to avoid hitting a deer crossing the road, lost control off the 2003 Chevy Tahoe she was driving and ended up in the swamp off of Route 30. Ferguson was transported to Porter Hospital for evaluation.

  On Oct. 23 at about 6:50 p.m. responded to a two-car accident on Route 7 in Ferrisburgh. The trooper reported that Halil Serdarevic of Burlington driving a 1997 Toyota Corolla rear-ended a 2008 Nissan driving by Timothy R. Rollet of Vergennes. The trooper said Serdarevic’s car was following too close while the Nissan was stopped to make a left turn. Two passengers in the Nissan were transported to Porter Hospital for what was reported as minor cases of whiplash.
