MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police interviewed a local woman who on Aug. 23 said she had received two letters from an unknown person alleging that her husband was “cheating on her.”

One of the two letters included a cell phone number to call. The cell phone, police determined, belongs to a 17-year-old Cornwall youth who said he did not write the letters and did not have any knowledge why his phone number was included in the letters.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Investigated a report of a Toyota Prius driving into the National Bank of Middlebury building off Court Street on Aug. 20. Police said the driver, Emile Desautels, 87, of Salisbury had apparently inadvertently slipped his foot off the brake and onto the accelerator, driving his vehicle through the glass façade of the bank at a low rate of speed. Police said no one was hurt in the incident and the bank reopened promptly the next day.

•  Were informed on Aug. 21 of the theft of a scooter from a Peterson Terrace residence.

•  Investigated a report of two people panhandling at the McDonald’s Restaurant drive-through on Aug 20.

•  Responded to a reported dispute between tenants of a Halladay Road apartment on Aug. 21.

•  Investigated a trespassing complaint at a Court Street apartment on Aug. 21.

•  Served a no-trespass order on a person who was not wanted at the McDonald’s Restaurant on Court Street Extension on Aug. 21.

•  Received a report about a reported $40.15 gas drive-off at the Middlebury Village Depot on Court Street on Aug. 21.

•  Responded to a Fields Road residence on a report of a woman trying to harm herself on Aug. 21.

•  Told a Court Street resident to turn down his music on Aug. 22.

•  Were informed that a parked car was hit by another vehicle in the Court Street Plaza lot on Aug. 22.

•  Received a report that $200 in cash had been stolen from a locked cabinet at Rainbow Pediatrics on Collins Drive on Aug. 22.

•  Received, from a local citizen on Aug. 23, six unused syringes she had found on Exchange Street near the intersection with Elm Street.

•  Were informed that someone had stolen a message board from in front of the East Middlebury Post Office on Case Street on Aug. 23.

•  Were informed that someone had stolen a cell phone from an unlocked vehicle parked off South Pleasant Street on Aug. 23.

•  Received a report that $47 had been stolen from a cash register at Middlebury Fitness on Wilson Road on Aug. 23.

•  Interviewed a local juvenile who claimed to have been “jumped” by someone in the Washington Street Extension area on Aug. 24. The youth said he was able to elbow his attacker and run home.

•  Warned several youths on Aug. 24 not to ride their bikes without headlights.

•  Responded to a single-vehicle accident, with injuries and possible fluids leaking Creek Road, south of the ball field. The vehicle hit a tree and there was a dog inside the vehicle that took off  following the crash, according to police.

•  Assisted a local woman who said she was thinking about harming herself on Aug. 25. Police said the woman was taken to Porter Hospital.

•  Responded to a report of an unwanted man at a Jayne Court residence on Aug. 25.

•  Investigated a report of a youth being assaulted by two other youths in the Washington Street Extension area on Aug. 26.

•  Responded to a noise complaint at the Greystone Motel on Route 7 South on Aug. 26.

•  Assisted a local woman who reported receiving harassing phone calls on Aug. 26.

•  Were informed that someone had stolen a cell phone from an unlocked vehicle parked off Bakery Lane on Aug. 26.

•  Cited Marien P. Brandon, 33, of Bristol for driving under the influence, following an investigation of a vehicle veering off Case Street on Aug. 26.

•  Were called to a Case Street residence amid reports of a possible intruder on Aug. 27. Police said a woman had locked herself and her young child in a bathroom after she heard a scream at her front door. Police said they found no signs of intruders.
