Middlebury Police Log: Crashes, thefts, alcohol keep police busy

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police dealt with mostly routine matters between Sept. 3 and 9, including car accidents, retail thefts, drunkenness, fake IDs and harassing phone calls.

In that week, Middlebury police:

•  On Sept. 3 dealt with a Buttolph Drive complaint of an unleashed dog harassing another dog.

•  On Sept. 3 responded to Porter Hospital’s emergency room to help deal with a potentially violent patient.

•  On Sept. 3 received a tip about illegal drug sales in Middlebury.

•  On Sept. 3 heard that a young female had threatened harm to herself in a text message, and spoke to her and her mother and determined she was OK.

•  On Sept. 3 conducted a follow-up interview in a case of alleged sex offenses.

•  On Sept. 3 were told that a John Graham Court resident was receiving threatening calls from two Lincoln residents, who were told to stop calling and not to make a threatened visit.

•  On Sept. 3 responded to a report of a large fire near Sugarwood Court and warned people there not to violate town fire laws.

•  On Sept. 3 warned a caller to stop harassing a Court Street family.

•  On Sept. 3 checked the welfare of a man’s adult children, who were found to be fine.

•  On Sept. 4 helped the Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association deal with a difficult patient.

•  On Sept. 4 dealt with a possible case of Social Security number theft.

•  On Sept. 4 cited Joey E. Ciaramitaro, 19, for retail theft for allegedly taking razor blades from Shaw’s Supermarket.

•  On Sept. 4 began an investigation of the shooting of a dog on Airport Road. Officer Fisher asked that anyone with information on the case call him at 388-3191.

•  On Sept. 4 accepted a wallet that had been found near Otter Creek Bakery.

•  On Sept. 4 checked out a report of gunshots heard near Piper Road, but found nothing.

•  On Sept. 4 responded to a report of a four-wheeler being driven on Airport Road, but found nothing. 

•  On Sept. 4 took a man reported to possibly be homeless and rummaging around the rear of Woodware at about 10:30 p.m. to the Blue Spruce Motel.

•  On Sept. 5 while on foot patrol saw a man wearing only underwear run by them on Park Street; police determined he had been swimming in Otter Creek and was intoxicated. Police took him to his nearby home and retrieved his wallet, phone and clothing from near the river.

•  On Sept. 5 cited Joseph Van Kleef, 19, of Brandon for retail theft after being called to Shaw’s.

•  On Sept. 5 learned that a half-dozen Middlebury Union High School students were absent, most without permission, after attending a late-night concert in Burlington the evening before. One could not be found and was reported missing in Burlington, police said.

•  On Sept. 5 checked the welfare of a South Pleasant Street resident and a Court Street resident; both were found to be OK.

•  On Sept. 5 turned over a drunken Maple Street resident to a friend who said he would look after him.

•  On Sept. 5 cited a college student for presenting a fake ID at the liquor store in Hannaford’s.

•  On Sept. 6 cited Jason Kimball, 44, of Salisbury on an outstanding warrant.

•  On Sept. 6 took a call from a state probation and parole official stating that James Galenkamp, 58, of Middlebury had missed an appointment and that if he was found to be drinking that he was in violation of probation. Police arrested Galenkamp, and the Addison County Sheriff’s Department returned him to state custody at the Marble Valley Correctional Center.

•  On Sept. 6 found a Counseling Service of Addison County client who had left the CSAC office and took her to the Porter ER.

•  On Sept. 6 responded to Jackson Lane after a resident said that her ex was on the lawn “out of control.” He was gone when police arrived.

•  On Sept. 6 checked a report of a fight on a Seymour Street sidewalk, but found nothing.

•  On Sept. 7 cited three males for underage drinking at about 4 a.m. after finding them on Shannon Street with an open bottle of vodka; police also confiscated a fake ID.

•  On Sept. 7 took a report of an accident in the Hannaford’s parking lot.

•  On Sept. 7 found a campsite near the Water Street railroad bridge that police said was occupied by a man for whom there is an outstanding warrant.

•  On Sept. 7 dealt with an accident in the Kenyon Arena parking lot. 

•  On Sept. 7 cited Karen Lyons, 35, of Middlebury for violations of conditions of release. Police allege Lyons picked up a bottle of wine at Hannaford’s and drank it in the women’s room.

•  On Sept. 7 told a male to stop making harassing calls to an East Middlebury resident.

•  On Sept. 7 were told a teenage girl had been followed by a man in the Middle Road area until she ran into Hannaford’s; police could not find him but said they will be on the lookout.

•  On Sept. 7 were told by a Hannaford’s employee that a female had tried to use a fake ID.

•  On Sept. 7 dealt with a report of a loose bull on Route 7 North.

•  On Sept. 8 began an investigation of a Seminary Street incident in which a child was allegedly dragged behind a van; police were consulting with the state’s attorney earlier this week about possible charges and where to file them, and the incident was reported to the Department of Children and Families.

•  On Sept. 8 responded to the scene of a two-car accident on Main Street.

•  On Sept. 8 checked the welfare of a Seymour Street resident on behalf of his daughter; he said he was in pain, but didn’t need help.

•  On Sept. 8 heard from a North Street resident that a painting had been stolen from his apartment.

•  On Sept. 8 issued court diversion paperwork to an individual who used a fake ID at Hannaford’s.

•  On Sept. 8 looked into a possible break-in at a Route 7 North self-storage unit.

•  On Sept. 8 received a tip about illegal drug activity in the Middlebury area.

•  On Sept. 9 put out a fire in a Case Street yard and issued a warning.

•  On Sept. 9 dealt with loose horses on Seminary Street Extension.

•  On Sept. 9 heard a complaint from a Cross Street resident that his neighbor had a check from President Obama for $1 billion. Police advised the caller the check probably wasn’t real.

•  On Sept. 9 checked out a report of gunshots on Ossie Road and spoke to two people who thought they were fireworks.
