MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Leslie A. Newton, 40, of Williamstown, Vt., on Aug. 7 for driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license and having an active warrant for his arrest for failure to appear in Washington County Superior Court for a previous DUI charge. The citations followed a stop at the intersection of Court Street and Mary Hogan Drive on Aug. 7.

Police said Newton was lodged for lack of bail.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Investigated a report of a man illegally tossing trash in a Dumpster off Valley View Road on Aug. 4. Police said the man retrieved his trash.

•  Cited Seth Duval, 24, of Middlebury for simple assault following an alleged incident at a Valley View residence on Aug. 4.

•  Were informed of the theft of a tile saw from an Elm Street residence on Aug. 5.

•  Received a complaint on Aug. 5 about some checks being stolen, then forged, from a Chipman Park residence. Police said the victim has declined to pursue any investigation due to the suspect being a family member.

•  Assisted a Washington Street business with an angry customer who was awaiting a wire transfer on Aug. 5.

•  Responded to a report of an intoxicated woman loitering on the lawn behind the Middlebury Animal Hospital on Washington Street Extension on Aug. 6.  Police said the woman ultimately returned to her home.

•  Were informed of the alleged theft of some cash and prescription drugs from a South Main Street residence on Aug. 6.

•  Investigated the report of a window being broken out of a parked car on Bakery Lane on Aug. 6.

•  Cited Jason Shaffer, 23, who is homeless, for burglary and petit larceny, after he allegedly stole some items from a Valley View Drive residence on Aug. 6.

•  Came upon some homeless people who were sleeping in the town gazebo off Main Street on Aug. 7. Police referred these individuals to seek out help from Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects (HOPE).

•  Investigated a road rage complaint involving two drivers on Route 7 South on Aug. 7.

•  Tended to a dispute between a man and a woman over possessions in a storage unit off School House Hill Road on Aug. 7.

•  Investigated a report of some small children who were unattended, beeping the horn in a vehicle parked off Cross Street Extension on Aug. 7.

•  Responded to a report of an intoxicated woman, believed to have been suicidal, riding a bicycle on Creek Road on Aug. 7. Police took the woman to Porter Hospital for evaluation.

•  Heard from a local parent on Aug. 7 who alleged her son’s video game console had been stolen by a fellow student at a Middlebury child care program.

•  Responded to a domestic dispute at a South Village Green residence on Aug. 8.

•  Turned over, to Middlebury College Public Safety, an intoxicated woman who had passed out on the steps of Two Brothers Tavern on Main Street on Aug. 8.

•  Were informed of the theft of two marine batteries from outside an Ossie Road business on Aug. 8.

•  Warned a Washington Street resident about making too much noise on Aug. 8.

•  Took, to Porter Hospital, an intoxicated woman who had been sitting in the parking area near the municipal swimming pool at around 1 p.m. on Aug. 9.

•  Cited Elizabeth Cashman, 56, of Graniteville, Vt., for theft of services, after she allegedly refused to pay her cab fare to Small City Taxi on Aug. 9. Police said the cab driver had taken the woman to the Middlebury Inn.

•  Investigated the theft of a motorcycle from a storage building on Washington Street on Aug. 9.

•  Responded to a report of a Woodbridge Lane resident trying to commit suicide on Aug. 9. Police said they found the woman to have superficial injuries. Middlebury Regional EMS took the woman to Porter Hospital, where she was treated and put in touch with counselors.

•  Served court diversion paperwork to an underage youth who had tried to buy alcohol at a Court Street Extension store using a fake identification card on Aug. 9.

•  Issued court diversion paperwork to several juveniles for underage drinking at a noisy party at a Heritage Circle residence on Aug. 10.

•  Responded to a larceny complaint at a Court Street residence on Aug. 11.
