Middlebury Police Log: Police investigate fraud, assault cases, help farm injury victim

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police dealt with a variety of incidents between July 13 and 20, including an alleged assault and a serious farm injury.

In those eight days, Middlebury police:

• On July 13 were told by an East View Terrace resident about unauthorized credit card use, a case that is still being investigated.

• On July 13 began investigating an alleged assault on College Street on the Middlebury College campus that police said possibly involved unlawful restraint.

• On July 13 responded to a collision between two cyclists at the intersection of Storrs Avenue and College Street, and cited one for operating a bike at night without illumination.

• On July 14 dealt with a two-vehicle accident on Gorham Lane; police said a pickup hit a landscaping trailer.

• On July 14 checked out a report of a motorcyclist drinking alcohol in the Short Stop parking lot on Court Street Extension; he was gone when police arrived.

• On July 15 responded to a report of a man putting rocks on the railroad tracks near Main Street; police removed a rock, but found no one.

• On July 15 installed three car seats for expecting parents at the police station.

• On July 15 served a subpoena on a Sugarwood Apartments resident.

• On July 15 took a woman who was feeling suicidal from a Court Street residence to Porter Hospital to meet with Counseling Service of Addison County personnel.

• On July 16 went to East Middlebury and found the daughter of a man who was worried because he had not heard from her for a month.

• On July 16 responded to a car vs. bicycle accident on Merchants Row; police said no one was hurt.

• On July 16 calmed a father-daughter verbal dispute at a North Forty Lane residence.

• On July 16 returned a puppy found lost on Seymour Street to its owner.

• On July 17 responded to a report of farm equipment being run late at night on Creek Road and making excessive noise, but found nothing.

• On July 17 took a call from South Street Extension in which a man reported his mother’s credit card had been fraudulently used; the case remains under investigation.

• On July 17 on North Branch Road issued court diversion paperwork to a teen male found in possession of alcohol.

• On July 17 responded with rescue and fire personnel to a farm accident on Route 7 South; the victim was airlifted to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

• On July 18 tried but failed to find a young couple reported to be yelling at each other on Main Street.

• On July 18 responded to a report of an accident on Chateau Road on the Middlebury College campus in which a staff member reported getting whiplash; the other vehicle left the scene and could not be found.

• On July 18 took a report that DVDs and a GPS unit had been stolen from a car parked at the Middlebury Inn.

• On July 18 recovered a sign taken from the corner of Munger Street and Painter Road.

• On July 18 took a report that a drill had been stolen from a Case Street worksite.

• On July 19 calmed a verbal domestic dispute at a Seymour Street residence.

• On July 19 helped a South Munger Street resident dislodge a live round that was stuck in an older rifle.

• On July 19 responded to Porter Hospital after being told a CSAC patient had a knife.

• On July 19 heard from a Case Street resident that someone had left an unwanted boat and trailer on her property; police could not contact the owner, and the property owner said she would have the boat and trailer towed.

• On July 20 just after midnight took a report that a man came into the Short Stop, opened and drank a beer and refused to leave. Another man then came in, and the first man tried to grab money from him, leading the second man to punch him. Police are still investigating the incident.

• On July 20 responded to Porter Hospital to assist in dealing with a man with mental health issues.

• On July 20 dealt with a two-car accident on Leland Road in which one car left the scene.

• On July 20 looked into a report of a burglary on South Pleasant Street.
