VERGENNES — In the final week of April and the first week of May, Vergennes police handled incidents including vandalism, theft of a rototiller, car accidents, several quarrels, attempted fraud, driving under the influence of alcohol, parking problems, a possible case of child abuse, and an injured cyclist.

Between April 24 and May 7, Vergennes police:

•  On April 24 investigated vandalism to an SUV parked at Northlands Job Corps; police said eggs were thrown on its roof.

•  On April 24 spoke to a man who was reported to be looking in home windows while walking his dog in the First Street area; the man denied doing so, but police warned him to stay on sidewalks.

•  On April 24 took a call from a man who said he had left a wallet on the hood of a vehicle and then drove on Comfort Hill; police advised him to cancel checks and credit cards and asked public works employees to keep an eye out for it.

•  On April 24 checked in on a Hillside Drive apartment where a resident had left a faucet running while in the unit, and it had flooded a neighboring unit. Police said the resident did not seem impaired, although they returned later that night because she burned herself with hot oil and needed medical attention.

•  On April 24 talked with post office officials and Northlands security about the possible theft of prescription drugs that had been mailed to a student.

•  On April 25 delivered a death notice to a city resident on behalf of Shelburne police.

•  On April 27 backed up Vermont State Police at a DUI case on Sand Road in Ferrisburgh.

•  On April 27 helped the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad at a Main Street call.

•  On April 28 looked unsuccessfully for kids reported to be crossing West Main Street on ATVs.

•  On April 28 investigated the theft of a $250 rototiller from a West Main Street yard; police are trying to reach a man who had contacted the owner about buying it.

•  On April 28 went to the John Graham Shelter to help calm two arguing residents. Police said staff had calmed the situation by the time they arrived, but another incident flared up before they left: A drunken resident started badmouthing staff and residents to another resident. Because she was in violation of the center’s sobriety policy, staff arranged a motel stay for the resident, and police backed them up during the incident.

•  On April 29 helped VARS at a Northlands call.

•  On West Main Street helped load a dog that had been struck and killed into its owner’s car on May 1.

•  On May 1 responded to the Shaw’s Supermarket parking lot, where a car window had been broken by debris kicked up by a weed whacker.

•  On May 1 took a report from a woman that she had been pursuing a home rental on Main Street but became suspicious when asked to wire money to a Walmart for a deposit. She told police she learned the property was not for rent and then reported the fraud. Police received no answer at a phone number she provided.

•  On May 1 helped state police by responding to help a woman who had a flat tire and was trying to change it in traffic at the intersection of Routes 7 and 22A.

•  On May 2 alerted Department of Motor Vehicles personnel about a truck headed northbound on Route 22A from Addison, and DMV stopped the truck for an inspection in Vergennes.

•  On May 2 dealt with a minor two-car crash at the intersection of Main and South Water streets.

•  On May 2 calmed a dispute about a Main Street parking spot and warned a visitor to an apartment building to respect the parking rules.

•  On May 2 sent the department K-9 unit to a Ferrisburgh home to find a 14-year-old who had bolted from her home without permission; the team traced her to a camper in the home’s yard.

•  On May 3 heard from a resident that she and her friends had received suspicious texts from an unknown caller offering jobs; police called the number but no one answered.

•  On May 3 went to the Snake Mountain area to help state police find a missing person. Police said he was found and received drug citations from VSP after heroin was found in his car.

•  On May 4 helped VARS at a North Street call.

•  On May 4 helped state police by checking the welfare of a possibly suicidal person on Lower Notch Road in Bristol; the person was found to be OK.

•  On May 4 ordered moved a vehicle that was parked near the John Graham Shelter and partially blocking traffic.

•  On May 4 helped Chittenden County Superior Court by serving a subpoena on a city resident.

•  On May 5 checked the welfare of a woman found unresponsive in a car in Falls Park. She woke up when police opened the car door and admitted heroin use, but police let her go because there were no drugs in the car.

•  On May 5 ordered delivery trucks moved that were blocking South Water Street traffic.

•  On May 5 handled a one-car accident on Main Street; police said a car parked at Small City Market popped out of gear, rolled down the hill and struck a utility pole, doing enough damage that it had to be towed.

•  On May 6 took a report of a fender-bender in the Aubuchon Hardware parking lot.

•  On May 6 cited Matthew Trueheart, 28, of Ferrisburgh for DUI and failing to stop for a red light; police allege his evidentiary test showed a blood-alcohol content of 0.055, below the legal limit of 0.08, but it was taken some time after he was stopped.

•  On May 7 were told by a Hillside Drive apartment resident that a parent had been overheard threatening to hit a child again. The parent said the child had been disciplined, but not struck. Police reported the incident to the Department for Children and Families.

•  On May 7 responded along with VARS to the intersection of Main Street and Macdonough Drive, where a cyclist had struck a curb and been thrown off the bicycle and into a stop sign. VARS took the victim to Porter Hospital for treatment.
