Vergennes Police Log: Local man cited for allegedly assaulting woman who was carrying a baby

VERGENNES — On Aug. 11 Vergennes police arrested a 27-year-old city resident and cited him for aggravated domestic assault.

Police allege Richard T. Brown grabbed his girlfriend’s teenage daughter by the neck and threw her on a couch, while the victim was carrying a baby in her arms. They said the victim was not seriously hurt, but suffered scratches.

Police allege that Brown was intoxicated at the time of the incident, which they said occurred in at School Street residence. Police jailed Brown at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility.

In other action since the beginning of the month, Vergennes police:

•  On Aug. 2 while responding to another incident on Second Street smelled marijuana and discovered two five-foot marijuana plants at a home there. Police cited Amanda Martell, 33, for cultivation and possession of marijuana, ticketed her for possession of drug paraphernalia, and confiscated the plants.

•  On Aug. 3 after a call from Porter Hospital that an infant was severely burned, called the Department for Children and Families (DCF) and the Addison County Special Investigation Unit to investigate; it was determined the burns were the result of an accident.

•  On Aug. 3 helped the Addison County Special Investigation Unit collect evidence in a child-abuse case.

•  On Aug. 3 helped Vermont State Police investigate a case in which a Ferrisburgh man allegedly shot his neighbor’s dog.

•  On Aug. 3 aided the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad with a Ferrisburgh girl who was cutting herself.

•  On Aug. 4 cited Richard F. Pixley of Vergennes for driving under the influence of alcohol and refusal to submit to testing, following a downtown traffic stop.

•  On Aug. 4 referred a case of juveniles spray-painting to the Addison County State’s Attorney’s office.

•  On Aug. 5 calmed an argument over child custody on the city green.

•  On Aug. 7 helped state police on the scene of the two-vehicle crash on Route 22A in Bridport that claimed the lives of four Field Days workers.

•  On Aug. 9 issued court diversion paperwork to three teens for underage drinking at a Panton Road traffic stop and ticketed one for failing to yield at a stop sign.

•  On Aug. 12 cited Lee Cheney, 53, of Burlington for DUI following a Monkton Road traffic stop. Police allege his blood-alcohol content tested at 0.104; the legal limit for driving is 0.08.

•  On Aug. 13 cited Ryan McKinley, 35, of West Rutland for DUI refusal. Police stopped his car on Route 7 near Monkton Road on suspicion of leaving a Ferrisburgh gas station without paying for fuel.

•  On Aug. 14 after a complaint that a city man allegedly smoked marijuana in front of his children called in DCF to investigate. On Aug. 16 his mother called to say he also allegedly abuses them. Vergennes police are assisting DCF with the ongoing investigation.

•  On Aug. 15 conducted one of a number of recent patrols in the area of Green Street, Booth Woods and Sunset Court; police said they have received complaints about speeding in the neighborhood.

•  On Aug. 16 stopped a car after a report it had been operated erratically, discovered the driver was tired, and told him to take a break.

•  On Aug. 18 advised a resident who came to the office how to obtain a relief-from-abuse order.

•  On Aug. 18 helped state police cite an employee of a Main Street business.

•  On Aug. 18 on Green Street calmed a group of arguing people, including one man angry enough to punch his own vehicle, and identified one individual sober enough to drive them all home.

•  On Aug. 19 backed up state police at a Main Street traffic stop in which a criminal citation for driving with a suspended license was issued.

•  On Aug. 19 dealt with a minor two-car crash on Main Street.

•  On Aug. 19 participated in a multi-agency DUI checkpoint in Salisbury.

•  On Aug. 19 helped state police perform a DUI-drug screening at the city station.

•  On Aug. 19 helped VARS deal with a woman who had fallen at a party in Ferrisburgh and been knocked unconscious. Other partygoers had taken her to VARS headquarters on Panton Road.

•  On Aug. 19 helped the Chittenden County Sheriff’s Department perform a DUI-drug screening at the city station.

•  On Aug. 20 helped state police by responding to a family fight in Waltham.

•  On Aug. 20 cited Jesse Sawyer, 21, of Vergennes for operating a car without consent, stealing $40, and violating conditions of furlough. Police allege Sawyer took a family car without permission to northern Vermont and said state police found it in Derby.
