TROOPERS FROM BOTH the Vermont (left) and New York state police forces stood for a photo on the New York side of the Lake Champlain Bridge on Sept. 20 as they prepared to conduct saturation patrols on their respective sides of the bridge to promote safer driving in the region.

ADDISON COUNTY — In recent action Vermont State Police cited four local residents, in separate incidents, for driving under the influence of intoxicants.

In the first case, state police were investigating a motor vehicle crash on Creek Road in Salisbury on Sept. 13. While speaking with a witness that came upon the crash, the trooper detected signs of impairment, screened William Skidmore, 43, of Leicester for DUI and cited him for DUI, second offense.

The next incident occurred on Sept. 20 when at approximately 5:27 p.m. troopers stopped a vehicle driven by Stephen Mackenzie on Main Street in Vergennes. Troopers said they detected several signs of drug impairment in Mackenzie, 56, of Port Henry, N.Y. They screened him for DUI, processed him at the Vergennes Police Department, and cited him for driving under the influence of drugs and driving with a criminally suspended license.

Then, on Saturday, Sept. 23, at around 8 p.m. troopers responded with personnel from the Starksboro Fire Department and Vergennes Area Rescue Squad to a report of a car crashing into a barn off Route 116 in Starksboro. State police report that 53-year-old Lonny Urban of Starksboro was driving his 2011 Nissan truck north on Route 116 when he sideswiped a guardrail, nearly struck an oncoming vehicle, traversed a lawn and crashed into a barn. Police found Urban’s truck lodged inside of the barn. VARS took Urban to UVM Medical Center. While at the medical center police screened, processed and cited Urban for DUI. This incident remains an active investigation by the state police.

Finally, on Sunday, Sept. 24, at a little past 10:30 p.m., state police received a report of a vehicle being driven erratically on Route 7 in Ferrisburgh. Police found the vehicle in question parked at a residence off Little Chicago Road and identified the driver as Kaylie Flint, 24, of Ferrisburgh. While speaking with Flint, troopers detected signs of impairment and they screened Flint for DUI. They took Flint into custody and transported her to the New Haven barracks for processing. Police cited Flint for DUI.

In other recent activity, Vermont State Police:

•  On Sept. 11 at 3 p.m. stopped a vehicle driven by Tiffany Bedard, 27, of Vergennes for speeding on Route 7 in New Haven and cited Bedard for driving with a criminally suspended license.

•  On Sept. 13 at a few minutes past midnight responded to a report of a one-car crash on Creek Road at Dewey Road in Salisbury. Driver Danielle Austin, 39, of Leicester was taken to Porter Hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries and life-flighted to UVM Medical Center in Burlington, where she died at 3:32 p.m. due to injuries she sustained during the collision. This case is active as Vermont State Police on Sept. 19 said they were still investigating the incident. A longer story appeared in the Sept. 18 edition of the Independent.

•  On Sept. 13 at around 7 a.m. responded to a report of a property damage crash that occurred on Route 22A in Shoreham. Police said Jose Ramon Carbuccia-Lahoz, 30, of Allentown, Penn., had driven his commercial motor vehicle off of the road and struck a power pole, destroying the pole and causing significant damage to the truck’s trailer. Carbuccia-Lahoz fled the scene and was stopped by Vergennes police at the Kennedy Brother’s complex. State police cited Carbuccia-Lahoz for leaving the scene of a crash.

•  On Sept. 18 were told that some time that day between 3:30 and 9 p.m. someone broke into a vehicle parked in the parking lot of the Long Trail at Lincoln Gap and removed items from within a vehicle before leaving. Vermont State Police would like to hear from anyone who may have been in this area on this date and may have seen anyone acting suspicious, witnessed those involved, and/or may have seen a vehicle leaving the area quickly. Call VSP at 388-4919. Investigation continues.

State police remind all those using hiking trails during this fall season to remove all valuables from vehicles before leaving them unattended.

•  On Sept. 20 conducted a saturation patrol on Routes 22A, 125 and 17 in Addison County not far from the Lake Champlain Bridge. At the same time, New York State Police Troop B troopers conducted a saturation patrol on Route 185 in Crown Point. The purpose of this patrol was to enforce motor vehicle laws in both states and to promote safe driving practices. VSP troopers from the New Haven barracks stopped 29 vehicles for various violations. New York State Police enforcement numbers were not available at press time. Both agencies said they would continue joint traffic safety details in the future.

•  On Sept. 20 cited 26-year-old Deandre Gay of Burlington for negligent driving; the case stems from a crash on Aug. 21 at 6:45 a.m. on Route 22A at Lapham Bay Road in Shoreham in which a passenger was critically injured.
