ADDISON COUNTY — The light snowfall may have contributed to a couple car crashes that Vermont State Police responded to this past Sunday morning.

First, on Nov. 26 at approximately 7 a.m., troopers at the New haven barracks were notified of a one-car crash on Tyler Bridge Road in Monkton. Police report that driver Viktoriia Tokarenko, 21, of Rochester, N.Y., attempted to slow down for a curve near Turkey Lane when the 2006 Honda Civic she was driving went off the roadway. Slippery road conditions were determined to play a factor in the collision.

The Civic struck a mailbox and a utility pole. Tokarenko was uninjured, but the car was judged to be a total loss.

Neither alcohol nor drugs were determined to be contributing factors in the collision. Vermont State Police were assisted by the Monkton Fire Department and Bristol Rescue Squad.

Then, at around 8:30 a.m., state police were called to Wooster Road, near South Bingham Street, in Cornwall for a report of a one-car rollover crash. Police report that Carolina Harper, 33, of Burlington was driving too fast for conditions on the wet, muddy road, which caused the 2018 Subaru Crosstrek she was driving to leave the road and collide with a tree, which caused the vehicle to roll onto its roof.

Harper, who was wearing a seatbelt, sustained minor injuries and was transported to Porter Medical Center. The car was considered a total loss. State police issued a ticket for driving too fast. VSP were assisted by the Cornwall Fire Department and Middlebury Regional EMS.

Separately, Vermont State Police are investigating a Nov. 24 burglary at the Vermont Cookie Love business off Route 7 in North Ferrisburgh, during which the culprit(s) made off with a store safe containing an unspecified amount of money.

VSP Trooper Adria Pickin said the burglary was reported at around 8:30 a.m. on Friday. Preliminary investigation revealed the culprit(s) forced their way into building and removed a safe that had been bolted to the floor. The burglar(s) then left the business through a back door.

Police said they have collected evidence from the scene and are looking for anyone who might have information that could help in the ongoing investigation. Anyone who can help solve this crime is asked to call VSP at the New Haven barracks at 802-388-4919.

Meanwhile, on Nov. 22 — Thanksgiving Eve — between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. officers from the Vergennes, Bristol and Vermont State police departments and wardens from the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department conducted a DUI (driving under the influence) checkpoint on Route 7 at Hunt Road in New Haven. Officers focused their efforts on locating individuals operating under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Police contacted a total of 551 cars with approximately 1,378 people during this checkpoint. Several persons were screened for impairment.

These multi-agency checkpoints and high visibility patrols will continue in the Addison County area.

In other recent activity, Vermont State Police:

•  On the morning of Nov. 21 conducted two, simultaneous saturation patrols on Route 22A and Route 7 in Shoreham and Salisbury, respectively. The purpose of these patrols was to focus on speeding, operator’s use of hand-held devices while driving, to ensure seatbelt use and to promote driver safety and education. Troopers stopped 14 vehicles and issued several traffic tickets and written warnings. Four of the tickets were for use of a hand-held device while driving, two were to the commercial vehicles drivers; one traffic ticket was issued for a civil violation of possession of marijuana.

These high visibility patrols will be continuing throughout the Addison County area in an effort to improve safety on public roads.

A branch from the tree subsequently fell onto a nearby power line. There was light snow and the road was wet. Brown sustained no injuries but his vehicle sustained heavy front-end damage.
