VERGENNES — Vergennes police handled a variety of incidents between Jan. 22 and Feb. 4, including dealing with child custody disputes, helping motorist who had locked themselves out of vehicles, issuing citations following an alleged fight, investigating several car break-ins, stopping a rolling car from doing damage, and continuing to issue tickets to vehicle owners who neglect to obey the city’s wintertime ban on overnight street parking.

During those two weeks, Vergennes police:

On Jan. 22:

•  Calmed two child-custody disputes.

•  Responded to a report of an elderly man walking in the road on West Main Street and checked on him in his Hillside Drive residence to make sure he was OK.

On Jan. 23:

•  Served a relief-from-abuse order to a Hillside Drive apartment resident.

•  Ticketed two vehicles violating the parking ban.

•  Saw a car start rolling downhill on Green Street; one officer stopped it before it gathered momentum, and two more officers joined in pushing it into a parking place and putting the vehicle in park.

On Jan. 24:

•  Worked with the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad (VARS) on Green Street to help a citizen in a car possibly suffering a heart attack; VARS took him to Porter Hospital.

•  Took a report from a California police department that a fraudulent credit card purchase had been made at Country Home Products.

On Jan. 26 helped a motorist get into a locked car on Monkton Road.

On Jan. 28 issued seven traffic tickets during a directed patrol on Monkton Road.

On Jan. 30:

•  Checked a report of a car off Monkton Road and learned a passerby had helped push it out of trouble.

•  Responded to an East Street home, where a child was refusing to leave a locked bathroom; police said the child emerged when told police were on the way.

•  Cited two 18-year-old Northlands Job Corps students from New York, Dainea Phillips of Chazy and Richard McNulty of Maspeth, for disorderly conduct after an alleged fight; police said they were dismissed from the program.

On Feb. 1:

•  Ticketed a vehicle violating the parking ban.

•  Helped a motorist get into a locked car on First Street.

•  Were told a car backed into a Green Street driveway, broke a post, and drove off; police did not find the vehicle.

On Feb. 2:

•  Ticketed three vehicles violating the parking ban.

•  Told the grandmother of a girl at a home to leave the property and stop texting her in violation of a court order.

•  Helped persuade an uncooperative elderly resident at a care home to accept transportation to Porter Hospital.

On Feb. 3 ticketed four vehicles violating the parking ban.

On Feb. 4:

•  Began investigating the break-ins into four vehicles in the South Maple Street area; police said about $400 was taken from one and video games and petty cash taken from the others.
