Middlebury Police Log: Two from Springfield cited for retail theft

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Angelo Amoroso, 29, and Megan Amoroso, 30 — both of Springfield, Vt. — for retail theft, following an incident at Hannaford’s Supermarket on Nov. 28.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Investigated a report of a man allegedly trying to start a fire on Chipman Hill on Nov. 26. Police found the man, who said he was trying to start a fire in order to roast some chestnuts. Police reminded the man of the municipal ordinances against starting fires.

•  Cited Stephanie Brace, 29, of Ripton for a criminal count of driving with a suspended license, following a traffic stop on Route 7 South on Nov. 26.

•  Responded to a report of a domestic dispute on Case Street on Nov. 26. A police investigation revealed an “extremely intoxicated” woman had tried to strike a man. Police said Middlebury Regional EMS officials took the woman to Porter Hospital for evaluation.

•  Investigated a report of a parent allegedly assaulting a child in the Case Street area on Nov. 27.

•  Received a report that someone had cut the bed cover on a pickup truck parked off School House Hill Road on Nov. 27.

•  Warned a man for being on the town green after closing hours on Nov. 28.

•  Helped Vermont Department for Children & Families with two uncooperative juveniles on Nov. 28.

•  Received a report that a man allegedly offered money and marijuana to two children near the teen center off Mary Hogan Drive on Nov. 28. Police said the suspect was described as being African American, in his 20s, and was wearing a pink and purple iPod on his hip.

Police said they couldn’t find the man.

•  Cited Joey-Lynn Maness, 35, of Middlebury for retail theft, following an investigation at Hannaford’s Supermarket on Nov. 28.

•  Helped Vermont State Police screen a driver for operating under the influence following a traffic stop on Court Street Extension on Nov. 29.

•  Took, to Porter Hospital, a woman who said she had fled her apartment on Nov. 29 because she believed her husband was going to harm her. Police said they found the woman’s husband and another witness at the home, and both claimed there was no reason for the woman to have felt threatened.

•  Ticketed a youth found in possession of tobacco on MUHS grounds on Nov. 29.

•  Assisted a Middlebury Union High School student who was dealing with a crisis on Nov. 29.

•  Served a no-trespass order on a man suspected of trying to take some items from the Middlebury Discount Beverage & Redemption Center on McIntyre Lane on Nov. 29. Police said the man claimed he was going to pay for the items.

•  Took a loose dog (found in the Valley View area) to the Homeward Bound animal shelter on Nov. 29.

•  Told a Court Street Extension apartment tenant to stop banging on their floor on Nov. 29.

•  Cautioned a man who had been yelling at passing vehicles on Porter Drive on Nov. 29.

•  Received a complaint on Nov. 30 about several Middlebury Union Middle School students throwing snowballs at two other students during their walk home. Police said the School Resource Officer is looking into the incident.

•  Issued a no-trespass order on Dec. 1 to a drunken man who had allegedly gotten into some “scuffles” at Two Brothers Tavern on Main Street. Police helped tavern staff remove the man from the business.

•  Responded, with Middlebury Regional EMS officials, to a report of person overdosing on drugs in the East Main Street area on Dec. 1. Police said the person was taken to Porter Hospital.

•  Spoke with an East Munger Street resident on Dec. 1 who was concerned about people hunting on her property. Police said they gave the woman information on how to post her property.

•  Responded to the Mobil Short Stop gas station on Court Street Extension on a report of an ATV that had allegedly sped away without paying for gas on Dec. 1.

•  Helped Colchester police locate a person in the Ledgewood Court area who was suspected in a hit-and-run incident on Dec. 2.
