MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police recovered a car on May 24 that had been reported stolen earlier that day in New Haven. An officer attempted to stop the vehicle, which had no rear license plate, on Court Street. The vehicle accelerated and turned onto Washington Street, stopping in the Shaw’s Supermarket parking lot. The driver and occupants fled from the vehicle, according to police.

Police continue to investigate the incident.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Investigated a report of a man driving with an unrestrained baby in the car on Court Street Extension on May 19.

•  Received a report of a bad check being passed at an Exchange Street business on May 19.

•  Directed traffic on Elm Street while a disabled car was being towed away on May 19.

•  Investigated a report of a man waving an air-soft gun out the window of a Honda Element at the intersection of Main and Cross streets on May 19. Police said the complaint had been made 15 minutes after the incident and officers were unable to locate the vehicle.

•  Were informed that a Women, Infants and Children food delivery had been stolen from the porch of a Cross Street residence on May 19.

•  Investigated a report of harassing communication being passed through social media at Middlebury College on May 19.

•  Ticketed a Middlebury Union High School student for being in possession of marijuana on May 19.

•  Investigated a report of a barking dog complaint in the Woodland Park area on May 20.

•  Assisted an MUHS student who reported receiving unwanted text messages on May 20.

•  Served a no-trespass notice on May 20 on a man who was not wanted at a Seminary Street residence.

•  Received, from a Good Samaritan, an ATM card that he had found still inside the machine at a local bank on May 22. Police located the card’s owner.

•  Received a report that someone had shot the window of a train car while it was idle on the tracks off Macintyre Lane on May 22.

•  Responded to a noise complaint on Leno Lane at around 11:30 p.m. on May 21. Police said a neighbor was asked to stop working on his vehicle in his driveway.

•  Cautioned some juveniles on Route 7 North who had placed an improper 911 call on May 21.

•  Spoke to a local man who had mistakenly given his personal information to a scammer on May 21.

•  Investigated a truancy complaint at MUHS on May 21.

•  Received a report about a missing Middlebury College student on May 21. The student had last been seen at a bar in New York. Police said the student was located in New York by New York State Police at a gas station in Whitehall, N.Y.

•  Checked on the welfare of a Brookside Drive resident at the request of a relative on May 22. Police said the man in question was fine.

•  Investigated a report of a “very intoxicated” man walking along Route 7 South near Foster Motors on May 22. Police took the man into protective custody and released him into the custody of an acquaintance.

•  Received a bad check complaint from an Exchange Street business on May 22.

•  Assisted a local woman in filing for a temporary restraining order on May 22. Police said they are investigating whether a domestic assault might have occurred.

•  Issued three separate warnings for violation of the town’s open container ordinance on College Street on May 22.

•  Assisted firefighters with traffic control on College Street when a fire alarm at Voter Hall on Middlebury College campus went off on May 23.

•  Turned a drunken man over to a sober friend on May 23.

•  Responded on May 23 to a report of a motorist who was overdue returning home. Police said the motorist was located.

•  Took into protective custody a drunken man seen stumbling along East Main Street on May 23.

•  Received a complaint about some offensive graffiti that someone had sprayed on a Mill Street building on May 23.

•  Investigated a report of a Middlebury Union Middle School student threatening another student via Facebook on May 23.

•  Responded to a report of a vehicle being taken from Mike’s Auto on Elm Street on May 22, which was then found abandoned on Route 7 North on May 23.

•  Assisted a local parent in attempting to locate her daughter on May 23.

•  Took into protective custody a very intoxicated man located outside Two Brothers Tavern on Main Street on May 23. Police said they took the man to the Marble Valley Correctional Center as an incapacitated person.

•  Responded to a noise complaint at a Weybridge Street residence on May 23.

•  Investigated a report of fireworks being set off at a Case Street party on May 24.

•  Received a report about what authorities described as an “aggressive interaction” between two students at the Middlebury College library on May 24.

•  Served a temporary relief from abuse order to a man on Halpin Covered Bridge Road on May 24.

•  Responded to a landlord/tenant dispute on Case Street on May 24.

•  Conducted a motor vehicle stop on South Main Street with a truck that was reported to be operating erratically in Cornwall on May 24.

•  Responded to a report of an intoxicated male wandering on East Main Street, knocking on doors on May 24.

• Assisted a woman on Bakery Lane who had accidentally locked her young child in a vehicle on May 24. The vehicle was running with the air conditioning on and the child was OK, according to police. An officer stood by until a spare key arrived at the scene.

•  Interviewed a woman who reported her purse had been taken while at Two Brothers Tavern on May 24.

•  Cited Cheryl Barrows, 49, of Brandon for unlawful trespass and retail theft, following an alleged incident at the Hannaford Supermarket at The Centre shopping plaza on May 25. Police said they were called to Hannaford by store staff, who reported an individual on premises whom they suspected to have been shoplifting.

•  Investigated a property line dispute involving two East Main Street neighbors on May 25.

•  Responded to four separate noise complaints related to partying in and around the Middlebury College campus on May 25.

•  Were informed of the theft of an Xbox 360 controller from a North Pleasant Street residence on May 26.
