This past July I typed out a column picking the top 15 high school teams I’d seen in my nearly two decades of covering sports here at the word factory.
It didn’t take long for that list to become dated. As a fellow pickup basketball player pointed out this fall after the undefeated Middlebury Union football team steamrolled its way to the Division I title, it’s already time for a do-over.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team dropped both games of its own holiday tournament, both of them closely contested. The Tigers’ record dropped to 2-4.
On this past Friday, visiting Northfield topped the Tigers, 4-2. Justin Stone and Rio McCarty scored for the Tigers, and goalie Sawyer Ryan made 19 saves. Northfield goalie Riley Corey stopped 15 shots.
STARKSBORO — Jeffrey Keeney, the Starksboro man who was having trouble with the Vermont Health Connect website and the focus of an article in our Dec. 19 issue, told the Independent this week that he completed the application for himself and his family Dec. 24. Keeney said a VHC representative told him that his family’s insurance should begin on time on Jan. 1.
MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team split a pair of games at the Tigers’ own holiday tournament last week, losing a key matchup to a D-II rival before bouncing back for a shutout victory. The Tigers are 6-2.
When I went home for breaks during college, I would sub at the schools I attended growing up. Sometimes teachers wrote detailed lesson plans, other times nothing — leaving me with 80 minutes of instructional time and a classroom of students.
This year, I found Christmas to be exceptional in terms of good will, good food, good company and moments I can genuinely describe as “merry.” It was, all in all, a wonderful holiday season.
Boy, am I glad it’s over.
