Fort Ti Ferry closes early because of low lake level

SHOREHAM — The drought that has hurt famers and gardeners in Addison County has claimed one more victim — the Fort Ticonderoga Ferry.

The barge that carries up to 18 cars at a time across Lake Champlain between Larrabees Point in Shoreham and Ticonderoga, N.Y., was ending it’s season early today because of the lower than normal water level.

“The lake is so low now, there are days with the south wind that you can feel (the barge) dragging on the bottom,” said Alison Matot, who runs the ferry with her husband, Mike.

Bristol water leaks draw official attention

BRISTOL — Bristol Selectman Joel Bouvier raised concerns about water system leaks on Pine and Mountain View streets during the Bristol selectboard’s meeting Monday. The utility management company 64 Seconds estimated the Pine Street leak at 20 gallons per minute and the Mountain View leak at 15 gallons per minute.

Editor’s note: This is the tenth in a series of essays on Dutch philosopher Benedict Spinoza.

What is the Bible? It is a book that contains the sacred scriptures of Judaism and Christianity. However, Jews and Christians differ about its meaning, even though, for the most part, they are referring to much the same thing when they use the name “Bible.” A Christian Bible has two parts, whose names “Old Testament” and “New Testament” signify a theological view of human history that I will explain shortly.

Abenaki artifacts on display at Rokeby Museum

FERRISBURGH — The public is invited to come to the Rokeby Museum in Ferrisburgh onSunday, Oct. 23, at3 p.m.when Frederick Wiseman presents his work on Rokeby’s Abenaki artifacts.

Rowland E. Robinson had friends among the Abenaki who camped, hunted and fished along the shores of Lake Champlain. He collected baskets, snowshoes and other items, some of which are unique in New England. Frederick Wiseman will share his research into this little-known archaeological and ethnographic collection, featuring some surprising pieces.

The Vergennes Opera House is not hosting a performance this Saturday evening, it's a journey ? a journey through the history of jazz. It's also a celebration ? celebrating the 25th anniversary of Vergennes-based LC Jazz. This 18-piece classic big band along with actor Christopher Ross will guide the audience from the birth of jazz in New Orleans through the fabulous '50s ? think Sinatra, Bennett and Darin. Show starts at 7:30 p.m.

Safety of VGS pipeline questioned

VERMONT — Opponents of a 41-mile natural gas pipeline into Addison County have filed a complaint with a federal agency, alleging that Vermont’s Department of Public Service overlooked repeated safety violations during the pipe’s construction.

Department of Public Service Commissioner Chris Recchia said the accusations are entirely unfounded.

“This is a hail-Mary, last-ditch effort to scuttle this project,” Recchia said.

New Haven's Lincoln Peak earns national 'Winery of the Year' award

NEW HAVEN — After much swishing and spitting, winners were named at the 2016 International Cold Climate Wine Competition last month, and Lincoln Peak Vineyard of New Haven came out on top as “Winery of the Year.”

Out of 365 wines from 64 commercial wineries across the U.S. and Canada, the New Haven vineyard’s wines took home the most medals and awards at the competition in St. Paul, Minn.

“We were awarded one Best in Show, two Double Golds, three Golds, three Silver and two Bronze medals,” said Sara Granstrom, of Lincoln Peak.
