Vermont becomes first state to repeal felt wader ban

Posted on June 27, 2016 |
By Emma Cotton

ADDISON COUNTY — In 2011 Vermont banned people who fish from wearing felt-soled wading boots with the goal of preventing the spread of didymo. At that time, it was thought that this slimy algae was an invasive species, and that it could be transported between rivers in the waders’ porous felt soles.

Now Vermont, the second of seven states to prohibit felt-soled boots, will repeal the ban on July 1.

ADDISON COUNTY — With the first signs of summer come expectations of sun, lemonade, popsicles and, here in Vermont, fresh fruit and vegetables.

However, for those children who qualify for free or reduced-price meals during the school year, summer is potentially a two-and-a-half-month stretch without stable, nutritious meals.

Last May, 38 percent of students in Addison County qualified for subsidized school meals, and 42 percent throughout Vermont qualified.

Utility poles blamed for groundwater pollution

Posted on June 23, 2016 |
By Gaen Murphree

MONKTON — The Monkton selectboard was concerned when a local household’s drinking well was found to be contaminated with the known toxin pentachlorophenal soon after a utility pole sited close to the home’s drinking supply was replaced in March 2014.

The board took action that started a chain of events resulting in a state environmental report, recently posted on the Monkton town website, that raised flags about this widely used chemical, also known as “penta.”

SHOREHAM — On the drive from Cornwall to Shoreham, passersby can spot four steel figures — slightly larger than human size — bending with arms raised, embracing the rolling hills and ambling horizon line with euphoric grace.

Frank Ittleman has been collecting sculptures for 20 years, but this piece — “The Dancers” by Texas artist Jerry Daniel —is his favorite.

“The joy that they have with their poses — every time I see it, I smile,” he said.

BRANDON — Band-Aids, bug spray, pencils, softball videos, Gatorade, nail polish remover — the shelves and walls of an office lend a telling glimpse of the person who occupies it. And, after 38 years, Otter Valley physical education teacher Pattie Candon’s office is no exception.

The June 11 OVUHS graduation marked the end of Candon’s career at the Brandon school, but it was more than that. The longtime softball coach, gym teacher and graduation coordinator is retiring, yes, but she is also leaving the school she graduated from in 1972.
