n Bray suggests per parcel ChrisBray9612.jpg

MONTPELIER — Debate in Montpelier surrounding efforts to clean up the state’s waterways has been surging like the Otter Creek in April, but legislative action on funding for those efforts has been moving at a glacial pace.

With that in mind, Sen. Chris Bray, D-New Haven, is suggesting Vermont adopt a per-parcel fee that would yield $18.8 million of the estimated $30 million the state will need to raise during each of the next 20 years as its share of a federally mandated, $2.6 billion cleanup of Lake Champlain and related waterways.

By Gaen Murphree

BRISTOL — Concerns, questions, support for and objections to the anticipated extension of the Addison Natural Gas Project pipeline to Bristol took up a good part of Monday night’s selectboard meeting.

The meeting also brought to light some townspeople’s concerns about how the selectboard has both made and communicated its Vermont Gas-related decisions.

Early in the meeting, Bristol resident Sally Burrell gave voice to some of those concerns.

MIDDLEBURY — Microphone in hand, Consul General Emilio Rabasa addressed Mexican nationals at a mobile consulate event in Middlebury last Saturday, exhorting an assortment of Mexican dairy farm workers to know their rights — rights guaranteed by federal law and the U.S. Constitution.

Later that afternoon he stood in a Middlebury barn chatting with two local dairy workers about their lives both at home and here in Vermont.

Both workers, as it turns out, were from the state of Chiapas — near where Rabasa himself grew up.

n How to Eat LEAD CUT per A+L IMG_1951.jpg

What can you remember from 21 years ago? That was 1996.

Anything?

Some of us have incredible memories for random things, like our hair style or favorite sweatshirt. Others remember the feelings around big life moments. Then there are a few, who forget it all.

So, I wasn’t sure if anyone from our 1996 cast of “How to Eat Like a Child: And Other Lessons in Not Being a Grown-Up” was going to remember the show (or me, for that matter) when I asked around last week. But I was wrong. Very wrong.

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County businesses, institutions and individuals could play a larger role in donating food to low-income residents if there were more storage space, transportation options and publicity about the need for such contributions, according to a recent study of the local food system completed by a group of Middlebury College students.

The report, which will soon be delivered to the Addison County Hunger Council, also hints at a potential upcoming spike in food donations due to Vermont’s Act 148.

MIDDLEBURY — Stewards of Middlebury’s Memorial Sports Center have embarked on a new fund drive that would result in the long-awaited completion of the second floor of the 24-year-old community recreational facility that has served as the much-used home for Addison County ice hockey programs.

Specifically, boosters of the Memorial Sports Center, or MSC, want to raise $350,000 for a project that would, among other things, create a heated viewing area, elevator access and public restrooms for the top floor of the sports center.

Broadway Direct taps a dozen years in Vergennes

Posted on December 4, 2017 |
By Elsie Lynn Parini

n Broadway Direct BillC3292.jpg

There’s nothing quite like a Broadway show. They are simply magical.

If you’ve never been, picture this: As the sun sets, Broadway lights up. The strip is radiant with lights bounce off the theater signs, reflecting on buildings and damp city streets. People bustle down the sidewalks, others hop out of double-parked cabs, scurrying out of the chilly city air and into ornate theaters. Once seats are taken, the actors are ready, the orchestra is tuned and sets are in place, the velvet curtains go up on show after show.
