Bristol Police Log: Resident reports scam lottery letter

BRISTOL — A Bristol police district resident contacted police in July about a potential scam.

The resident on July 12 received a $1,900 check from New Bedford Symphony Orchestra of New Bedford, Mass., drawn on Sovereign Bank. The check was made out to the resident and attached to an enclosed letter from “Trans Financial Company (Lottery & Resource Management)” advising of a lottery winning in the amount of $250,000.

The letter requested $1,600 paid via Western Union in order to claim the $250,000 winnings.

Middle East reporter to give language school address

MIDDLEBURY — Clarissa Ward, the CBS News foreign correspondent who has been reporting this year from Egypt and Syria, will deliver the commencement address marking the end of the Middlebury Language Schools’ 99th summer session on Friday, Aug. 16, at 8 p.m. in Mead Chapel.

With President Ronald D. Liebowitz and Vice President of Language Schools, Schools Abroad and Graduate Programs Michael E. Geisler presiding, the college is scheduled to confer 118 master of arts degrees and seven doctor of modern languages degrees at the ceremony.

Vergennes Police Log: Larceny charges land city man in jail

VERGENNES — Vergennes police on July 31 arrested a city man for the second time in less than a week on larceny charges, and this time he was jailed.

Police said Tyler Flynn, 21, of Vergennes was lodged at the Chittenden County Correctional Center for lack of $10,000 cash bail after allegedly stealing a laptop computer from a second street home and selling it to a Burlington store.

Flynn, who five days before was cited for stealing copper wire and then released with conditions, was cited for petit larceny and violating the conditions of his earlier release.

Some Vermont historic sites are free Aug. 16

ADDISON — Aug. 16 is Vermont’s state holiday, commemorating Bennington Battle Day and the stunning American victory over the British at this Aug. 16, 1777, Revolutionary War battle. To celebrate, everyone is invited to visit the Vermont’s State-Owned Historic Sites on Friday, Aug. 16, when admission will be free to Vermont residents and Vermonters at heart.

ACTR announces Tri-Town bus changes

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Transit Resources (ACTR) has announced that its Tri-Town Shuttle Bus schedules will change beginning Tuesday, Aug. 20. The adjustments will primarily re-establish consistent connections between Vergennes and Bristol plus simplify the circuits within each municipality.

Middlebury to host Arts Walk on Friday

MIDDLEBURY — The 2013 Middlebury Arts Walk season continues with the season’s fourth event taking place on Friday, Aug. 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. Middlebury Arts Walk is a free event (for artists, venues and attendees) and is held the second Friday of the month from May to October. In many cases the art is on display all month long — not just that evening.

MIDDLEBURY — Sheriff Don Keeler has announced the return of Paul H. Poynter to the Addison County Sheriff’s Department after an 18 year absence.

Poynter began his law enforcement career at the Addison County Sheriff’s Department in 1988. Deciding that he wished to pursue a full-time career in law enforcement, he attended and graduated from the Vermont Police Academy in 1995.

Leicester joins invasive species fight

LEICESTER — The town of Leicester has been awarded a $28,000 grant from the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to help control invasive species on Lake Dunmore and Fern Lake, located in the towns of Leicester and Salisbury. The control program is coordinated and operated by the Lake Dunmore/Fern Lake Association.
