Boys’ soccer: Eagles, Tigers win on road

Local high school field hockey squads defeated

ADDISON COUNTY — Area high school field hockey teams hit bumps in the road late last week, as a tie for Otter Valley proved to be the only positive result in five collective outings for OV, Mount Abraham and Middlebury.

On Wednesday visiting Mount Anthony got a dozen saves from goalie Savannah Rogers in holding OV to a 0-0 stalemate. Otter goalie Ellie Ross stopped six shots in a game in which OV earned 12 penalty corners to the Patriots’ five.

St. J Hilltoppers edge MUHS Tiger football

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School football team gave undefeated Division I rival St. Johnsbury a battle on Friday night, but the visiting Hilltoppers came away with a 9-7 victory.

The 3-0 Hilltoppers took a 6-0 second-quarter lead via Jacob Cady’s 2-yard run. Cady finished with 88 yards on 21 rushing attempts for St. J, which outgained the Tigers, 359-187. Cady also completed 15 of 21 passes for 199 yards.

The Tigers seized a 7-6 advantage in the third quarter on a Cody Pomainville run and a Jackson Donahue kick.

Leicester woman killed in one-car crash in Salisbury

SALISBURY — A Leicester woman who was the mother of two was killed in a one-car crash just after midnight this past Wednesday.

Vermont State Police reported that Danielle Austin, 39, was driving a 2013 Chevy EQX westbound on Creek Road in Salisbury around midnight on Sept. 13 when she lost control of the vehicle and it crashed into a utility pole near the intersection with Dewey Road. Police said she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Shoreham to host Civil War talk on Wednesday

SHOREHAM — The Platt Memorial Library will host Vermont author and Civil War historian Howard Coffin On Wednesday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. for a presentation on the contributions of Vermonters in the Civil War. From Cedar Creek to Gettysburg, Vermonters were central to the Union cause. Coffin has written five books on the Civil War and given over 300 talks on the subject.

"Edgewater's 'Looking In, Looking Out' explores human structures in the natural world "

Edgewater Gallery’s two Middlebury locations will host the group show “Looking In, Looking Out: Two Galleries, Six Artists” this September. The show explores how man-made structures interact with the natural world. Edgewater Gallery on the Green will feature the work of painters Kathryn Milillo, Faye Mylen, and photographer Jim Westphalen. Stay tuned next week to read more about the other three artists exhibiting at Edgewater’s Gallery at Middlebury Falls.
