Traditional rivals topple Panther men's hockey

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s hockey team dropped a pair of non-league games to traditional rivals Plattsburgh and Norwich in recent action.

The 3-11 Panthers return to league play this weekend, when they visit Colby and Bowdoin.

On this past Friday visiting Plattsburgh edged the Panthers, 3-2, by scoring the tiebreaking goal in the second period after both teams scored twice in the first. The Cardinals improved to 8-7 and increased their all-time lead in the rivalry to 25-21-4.

College track and field teams sweep indoor meet

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams each claimed top honors among six competing schools at the Middlebury Winter Classic invitational on Saturday. Middlebury’s women earned 157.50 points, placing ahead of Rensselaer (121.50) and Franklin Pierce (106), while the men finished with 148 points, ahead of Rensselaer (136) and Franklin Pierce (101).

Both Middlebury teams return to action locally this Saturday when they host the Middlebury Winterfell at 11:30 a.m.

Women's hockey team sweeps in Bay State

BEVERLY, Mass. — The Middlebury College women’s hockey team swept two non-league Massachusetts teams this past weekend to improve to 8-3-1.

The Panthers, 4-1-1 in NESCAC play and ranked No. 7 last week in NCAA Division III, return to league action this weekend, when they host Bowdoin at 7 p.m. on Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday.

On Saturday the Panthers knocked off then No. 10 Endicott, 5-0, as Panther goalie Lin Han worked a 16-save shutout, her third of the season. The 13-1-1 Gulls suffered their first loss.

Women's basketball drops a pair

MEDFORD, Mass. — The Middlebury College women’s basketball team dropped two NESCAC road games this past weekend to fall to 2-2 in league play. The Panthers, 11-3 overall, will play at NESCAC foe Williams on Saturday.

On this past Saturday Tufts, at 14-2 and 3-1 in NESCAC play ranked No. 8 last week in NCAA Division III, used a 16-2 third-quarter run to defeat the Panthers, 61-45.

Meals on Wheels in need of volunteer help

ANWSD Early Education Program gets CLiF grant

WATERBURY CENTER — The ANWSD Early Education Program in Vergennes was recently one of 10 recipients of a Children’s Literacy Foundation (CLiF) grant. The awards go to organizations serving low-income and at-risk children in Vermont and New Hampshire.

Vermont State Police Log: Sleeping New Haven driver cited for DUI-drugs

ADISON COUNTY — A concerned citizen flagged down a Vermont State Police cruiser on Tuesday, Jan. 9, at approximately 8:15 p.m. in the parking lot of the Jiffy Mart on Route 7 in New Haven. The citizen told troopers that there was a woman slumped over in the driver’s seat of a white 2006 Chevy Impala in the parking lot.

Troopers saw the woman passed out in the driver’s seat, woke her up and determined that she did need medical attention.

Middlebury Police Log: Missing man found deceased

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police responded to a report of an unresponsive man on the town green in downtown Middlebury on Jan. 13. Police found 45-year-old Suad Teocanin deceased at the scene.

Police said they believed alcohol played a role to his succumbing to the cold, wet weather that evening.

Vergennes Police Log: Police investigate claim of child pornography

VERGENNES — Vergennes police said they cannot release any details, but they are investigating a child pornography case.

City police said they began investigating the case on Jan. 8, and are working with the Addison County Special Investigations Unit and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
