Bristol Police Log: Cops respond to mooners at town park

BRISTOL — Bristol police recently issued a log of the large number of incidents with which they dealt during the month of May — some of great importance, others routine police work.

For instance, on May 8 police responded to the town park, where three youths were reportedly “mooning” passing cars. The officer found no mooners.

Storm knocks out power to more than 1,000; noontime Festival show is cancelled

ADDISON COUNTY — A summer storm Tuesday night resulted in more than 1,200 Addison County power customers being without electricity as of Wednesday morning.

Green Mountain Power said its crews are working to repair more than 20,000 outages statewide. Damage was most severe in Washington and Addison counties.

Tuesday night’s storm was the second major weather event GMP has responded to this week. The first was a storm over Fourth of July weekend, after which GMP crews restored power to 37,000 clients statewide.

Cut paper art on exhibit in Vergennes

VERGENNES — Nationally exhibited Vermont-based artist Adrienne Ginter will have a solo exhibition at Outerlands Gallery in Vergennes for the month of July.

The exhibition will focus on Ginter’s hand-cut paper works, for which she has gained national acclaim. These incredible pieces have vibrant layers of color, intricate details and exceptional patterning. Ginter will also have watercolors, etchings, mini-paintings and jewelry on display.

Kids get free books for summer reading

ADDISON COUNTY — Most children living in poverty do not have any books at home, a sobering statistic that makes these students more likely to struggle in school and drop out before graduation. In addition, many students in this rural county do not have easy access to a library during the summer months when school is not in session. Yet research shows that reading during the summer can counter the academic summer setback students often experience when they return to school in the fall.

Seminary Street Extension in Middlebury closed for repairs July 7-11

MIDDLEBURY — Seminary Street Extension in Middlebury will be closed to through traffic from Monday, July 7, through Friday, July 11, due to a construction project.

The Middlebury Highway Department crews will be replacing culverts on the road, which is on the eastern side of the village and connects Washington Street and Valley View Road on the west to Quarry Road and Foote Street on the east.

Seminary Street Extension will be closed to all traffic between Valley View Drive and Foote Street throughout this period.

New Haven's Coffey among triathlon winners

SALISBURY — New Haven’s Chris Coffey was among the winners on Saturday as the Vermont Sun Triathlon Series opened its 29th season at Branbury State Park on Lake Dunmore with two simultaneous races.

Coffey prevailed the men’s side of the shorter Vermont Sun Triathlon, consisting of a 600-yard swim, 14-mile bike ride and 3.1-mile run. Also contested was the Lake Dunmore Triathlon, an Olympic distance event consisting of a 1,600-yard swim, 28-mile bike ride and 6.2 mile run.

Whiting man cited for threatening

MIDDLEBURY — A Whiting man on Monday pleaded innocent to disorderly conduct in Addison Superior Court, criminal division, in connection with a June 2 incident during which he allegedly threatened and harassed a worker at the Whiting General Store.

Alan N. White III, who according to court records has previously used the aliases “Jesus Christ” and “Jesus Christ White,” is accused of having entered the store on June 2 and threatened the store employee, according to an affidavit filed by Vermont State Police Trooper Andrew Leise.

Ex-POWs honored at Bristol banquet

BRISTOL — Bristol American Legion recently hosted its annual Ex-POW Banquet for the Vermont Chapter No. 1 Ex-POWs. There were a total of 65 in attendance including nine ex-prisoners of war from around Vermont.

Most of the ex-POWs are from World War II. There is one local Ex-POW, Roger Layn, who lives in Monkton. The rest of the attendees were family and friends of the ex-POWs along with senior officers of the Department of Vermont American Legion.

Bradford, Stone post Devil's Bowl wins

WEST HAVEN — An action-packed night of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series stock car racing this past Friday at Devil’s Bowl Speedway ended with two Addison County winners, Middlebury’s Todd Stone and Addison’s Chuck Bradford.

Johnny Scarborough and Stone split victories in the top-tier Modifieds, Bradford and Kyle Watrous each won Mini Stock features, and Robert Gordon and Scott MacMichael repeated in the Renegade and SK Light classes, respectively.
