County residents receive achievement awards for work at radio stations

SOUTH BURLINGTON — Hall Communications Radio Group, which includes 20 radio stations in five states, recently announced winners of their annual achievement awards. Two Addison County residents and employees of the Vermont radio stations received awards.

Kate Dubenetsky of Bristol is an account executive for WIZN-WBTZ-WJOY. She won the “Best Commercial Spec Contest” for the entire Hall Communications Radio Group with an advertisement for “Good Stuff.”

Vt. Department of Taxes launches statewide listening tour for small businesses

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Department of Taxes will to on a statewide tour to listen to the concerns and questions of small businesses. The public meetings, which will be held this month in St. Johnsbury, Montpelier, Burlington, Rutland and Bennington, are designed to let the department leadership hear from businesses.

'Go West' with Buster Keaton this Saturday

He never smiled on camera, earning him the nickname of “the Great Stone Face.” But Buster Keaton's comedies rocked Hollywood's silent era with laughter throughout the 1920s.

See for yourself with a screening of “Go West” (1925), one of Keaton's landmark feature films, on Saturday, Aug. 12, 7 p.m., at the Brandon Town Hall and Community Center. Jeff Rapsis will accompany the film with live music.

Pro tennis returns to Vermont

STOWE — The last time Vermont was host to a major professional tennis tournament was a decade ago, in 2007. It was the Fed Cup semifinals and big stars like Venus Williams, Nadia Petrova and Elena Vesnina drew crowds of 4,500 for both days of the tournament at Topnotch Resort.

MIDDLEBURY — Agri-Mark, a cooperative of 1,100 dairy farm families and maker of Cabot cheddar and dairy products, is proud to announce their selection by Governor Phil Scott as a receipt of the Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence.

Working with Efficiency Vermont and their Continuous Energy Improvement Initiative (CEI), the Middlebury facility assessed and optimized the energy usage required to make compressed air and improved overall efficiencies in plant-wide air usage.

Middlebury dean stepping down to return to classroom

MIDDLEBURY — Katy Smith Abbott will resign her position as Middlebury College’s Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of the College at the end of the year, College President Laurie L. Patton announced in an email to students last Friday afternoon.

“I am both saddened at the thought of not having her as a member of the senior administration and pleased that she is remaining at Middlebury and following her academic and personal interests,” Patton wrote.

Bristol woman awarded vet scholarship

BRISTOL — Students graduating veterinary school have an average student loan debt of over $162,000, according to a survey of the American Veterinary Medical Association. This is a crushing amount of debt for young veterinarians just starting out in their career and can take decades to pay off.

A group of Vermont veterinarians has awarded scholarships to three vet students — including one from Bristol — to help cushion the blow.

Shoreham Apple Fest seeks entries for its local photo contest

SHOREHAM — Photos are now being accepted for Shoreham’s Apple Fest Photo contest. This year’s theme is “Your Addison County.” Any and all sights or scenes that capture the “real” Addison County are welcomed.

An annual fundraiser for Shoreham’s Friends of the Platt Memorial Library, Apple Fest will be held this year on Sunday, Sept. 17 from 12-4 p.m. The event features music by Snake Mountain Bluegrass, a pulled pork sandwich lunch, a farmers’ market, an apple pie contest and children’s actvities.
