Lottery tickets festoon Brandon Lions Club Holiday Wreath

BRANDON — The Brandon-Forestdale Lions Club is raffling a 2017 Holiday Wreath filled with $200 worth of Vermont Scratch-off Lottery tickets.

Designed as a fundraiser, with all proceeds earmarked for local projects, Club President Patti Reynolds says the winner of the raffle has the potential of winning over $800,000. The wreath holds scratch-off tickets in a variety of denominations from $2 to $20.

Tickets are available from any Brandon-Forestdale Lions Club member at a price of $5 each, or three for $10. The winner will be chosen on Dec. 19.

Men's soccer reaches league final, but falls

MEDFORD, Mass. — Top-seeded host Tufts edged the No. 5 Middlebury College men’s soccer team, 1-0, in the NESCAC championship game.

Tufts improved to 15-1-2 and earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.

The 12-6 Panthers, who had upset the Nos. 4 and 3 seeds in overtime to reach the NESCAC final, were left waiting until Monday afternoon to learn if they will receive an at-large NCAA bid.

Panther grad earns NCAA honor

MIDDLEBURY — Maddie Pronovost, a 2017 Middlebury College graduate and captain of the Panther track and field team last year, has been given the 2016-17 NCAA Division III Female Student-Athlete Sportsmanship Award.

The honor comes after the Brookline, Mass., resident was selected as one of the Top 30 honorees (10 from each NCAA division) out of a record 543 nominees for the NCAA Woman of the Year award.

New Haven resident receives national FFA recognition

INDIANAPOLIS — Alan Curler of New Haven was recently selected to receive the Honorary American FFA Degree.

This award is given to those who advance agricultural education and FFA through outstanding personal commitment. The National FFA Organization works to enhance the lives of youth through agricultural education. Without the efforts of highly dedicated individuals, thousands of young people would not be able to achieve success that, in turn, contributes directly to the overall well-being of our society.

Eagles, loons showing good recovery

MONTPELIER — Vermont’s bald eagle population continued its recovery in 2017. Twenty-one pairs of adult bald eagles successfully produced 35 young in Vermont in 2017, a modern-day record in the state according to the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department. The species remains on Vermont’s endangered species list, but another strong year of growth has biologists hopeful for their continued recovery.

Learn about the transition faced by refugees who arrive in our state each year to find a safe haven on Thursday, Nov. 9, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Lawrence Memorial Library in Bristol. The presentation, “First Welcome for Refugees: Laying Solid Foundations for Renewed Lives in the U.S.,” is the latest installment of the One World Library Project and is supported in part by the Vermont Humanities Council.

Take steps to stay safe hiking and hunting

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department is recommending that hunters and hikers practice a few basic wilderness safety precautions and dress for the weather when heading out into the woods this fall.

“Just a few simple actions can ensure that hunters and hikers are prepared for a variety of conditions and situations,” said Maj. George Scribner of Vermont’s game warden force. “A little preparation is all it takes to have a safe and enjoyable experience outdoors.”

Farmers to meet with public at Nov. 9 forum

MIDDLEBURY — On Thursday, Nov. 9, local farmers are taking some time off the farm after the harvest to meet with interested community members who have questions about farming practices in Vermont, today, and in the future. A wide variety of local farmers will be available to discuss the practices they use on their farms to protect water quality, conserve the soil and remain economically viable in today’s markets.
