MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Union High School football coach Dennis Smith often says a win is a win.

After his Tigers emerged from Friday’s night’s opener on Doc Collins Field with a 21-13 victory in a game with a combined four interceptions and seven fumbles and saw his team have three touchdowns called back due to penalties — but still make a number of big plays — that phrase came to mind.

VERGENNES — Vergennes recently received more than $200,000 of good financial news, City Manager Mel Hawley told city council members at their Aug. 18 meeting.

Most of that money came in the form of two grants, Hawley said, one of $144,000 to support paving projects on South Maple Street and Panton Road and one of $45,000 to pay most of the cost of a new culvert on South Maple Street.

FERRISBURGH — Although there is still time for a negotiated solution, the Ferrisburgh farmer who upset his lakefront neighbors a year ago by firing a propane cannon to protect his sweet corn crop said this week he is prepared to use the cannon again as soon as next week.

Wayne Stearns, owner of Crazy Acres Farm on Schoolhouse Road, said if the flock of starlings that lives on his farm starts attacking his corn, he is considering deploying a cannon that in 2014 fired thousands of times a day for about a month.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Union High School activities director Sean Farrell said he had a transition plan in place for the school’s boys’ soccer program: Coach Bret Weekes would complete his third year leading the program, while MUHS math teacher Reeves Livesay would assist this year and then take over for Weekes in 2016.

That plan went by the boards when life threw a curveball at Weekes earlier this month: An illness that struck a family member living in Utah prompted a family decision to move back to that state to help provide long-term care and support.
