Letter served as welcome reminder

The handwritten letter arrived here from Vergennes right around Christmas, and essentially I have treated it like a gift.

And not because it was flattering. Signed “Grandma Bushee,” the handwritten document on a small, yellow lined sheet rightly took me to task for misspelling her grandchildren’s last name, and possibly for confusing their first names.

“Will you please spell my two grandsons’ names right?” wrote Ms. Bushee “I have not seen their names spelled correctly yet. I’m proud of them, as I was (of) their father and uncle in the ’70s.”

Ferrisburgh officials propose 3-percent hike in municipal budget

Posted on February 8, 2010 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh selectmen have proposed a 2010-2011 budget that, including charitable donations to be decided by residents on Town Meeting Day, would add about a half-cent to the town’s property tax rate. That increase would translate to $5 per $100,000 of assessed value.

Including about $57,700 of charitable requests, selectmen are proposing increasing town spending from about $1.52 million to $1.565 million.

That increase of about $45,500 translates to roughly 3 percent.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team edged visiting Stowe on Friday, 4-3, to improve its record to 10-8 and clinch a .500 season in its first season in Division II. The Tigers won just twice a year ago playing in D-I before this winter’s rebound.

The Tigers twice faced one-goal deficits in Friday’s victory and won despite being outshot, 24-10. Stowe’s Stacy Tomlinson scored at 1:31 into the first period, unassisted. Middlebury’s Maria Ploof evened things up about a minute later, with an assist from Emmy Hescock.

Scoring burst carries Commodores past Eagles

VERGENNES — Bright lights, Little City, big win.

Bathed in the glow of the new lights in the Vergennes Union High School gym, the Commodore boys’ basketball team flicked on a switch for a 14-0 first-half run in Thursday’s game vs. rival Mount Abraham.

That surge — in which VUHS senior forward Connor Merrill shone with 10 straight points — sparked VUHS to a 25-9 second-quarter lead on the way to a 61-34 victory over their friendly rivals as the usual Eagle-Commodore boys’ crowd of more than 1,000 cheered.

Shared septic could serve Addison buildings

Posted on February 4, 2010 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

ADDISON — On Monday at Addison Central School members of the Addison’s town hall committee and selectboard and a few residents heard that building a shared septic system to serve all town-owned buildings at the intersections of Routes 17 and 22A could probably be done.

But at a price: That system — which could resolve ownership of and allow renovation of Addison’s historic town hall — might cost up to $500,000, said Jon Ashley of Phelps Engineering Inc. of Middlebury.

Middlebury men ground Cardinals

MIDDLEBURY — When the Middlebury College men’s hockey team lost games on Jan. 22 and 23 at New England College and St. Anselm in gruesome fashion — five unanswered third-period goals at NEC as a 4-2 lead evaporated that Friday followed by a stunning 4-0 setback the next day, the Panthers’ first to St. Anselm in 16 years — the question became how a young Panther team would respond.

The answer? Quite nicely, thank you very much.

This past weekend the Panthers swept visiting NESCAC foes Colby and Bowdoin, leapfrogging them into third place in the league.

Win at Vergennes bags Mount Abe coach 300th win

VERGENNES — The Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball team rallied from a 15-3 deficit at Vergennes on Thursday for a 39-34 victory that was Coach Connie Larose’s 300th. (See related stories.)

Mount Abe senior Shanna Gebo said LaRose tried and failed in advance to hide that news from the Eagles.

“In the huddle we talked about how we knew it was her 300th,” Gebo said. “And she started blushing and getting red when we told her we really wanted to do it for her. And then of course she was just like, ‘Nope, it’s for you. Don’t think about it being for me.’”

BRISTOL — As longtime Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball coach Connie LaRose reached her 300th win at Vergennes on Thursday, current and former players praised LaRose as a coach and a person, while peers marveled at the Bristol resident’s long tenure and consistent success.

LaRose, 65, is in her 19th year heading the Mount Abe program. In the 1960s she coached a year each at the high school level in New Haven and Bristol (see related story). LaRose has won more games than any high school coach in Addison County, and her career winning percentage is about .660.

Senior housing project may open in 2011

VERGENNES — The principal developer of the planned Vergennes senior housing project said last week that he is optimistic that the last pieces of the funding puzzle will fall into place this spring, allowing construction to start this summer and — if all goes well — seniors to move in by the summer of 2011.

Matt Moore, Housing Vermont Inc.’s project developer for the proposed 25-unit, $5.8 million facility off Monkton Road, said two grant requests totaling $1.6 million are still outstanding.

City voters to consider bill-paying grace period

Posted on January 28, 2010 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Vergennes residents in March will have the chance to vote themselves a 15-day period during which they would be allowed to make late payments on tax and sewer bills without an interest penalty.

A provision for such a grace period is on the Town Meeting Day ballot adopted by Vergennes aldermen at their Tuesday meeting.

Current city laws call for a 1 percent penalty to be applied automatically if quarterly tax or sewer payments are even one day late, but City Hall workers urged aldermen to consider giving residents the power to make the change.
