Boys' hoop: Tigers clinch Lake Division; Winslow scores 1,000th point

ADDISON COUNTY — Otter Valley senior John Winslow reached the 1,000-point milestone to highlight local boys’ basketball action in the latter half of last week.

Overall, OV won two of three games, while Middlebury won to clinch the Lake Division title and Vergennes and Mount Abraham came up short.

Tiger girls' hockey team clinches tie for top seed

MANCHESTER — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team won twice last week to apparently clinch at least a tie for the top seed in Division I. The Vermont Principals’ Association will announce playoff pairings on Thursday.

Mount Abe girls' basketball holds off Milton, 34-29

MILTON — The Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball team outlasted host Milton on Friday, 34-29, to finish the regular season at 14-6. Eagle Emma Carter scored 10 points to lead all scorers in the victory over the 8-12 Yellowjackets.

The two-time Division II defending champion Eagles will enter the playoffs as the No. 2 seed, a status that the Vermont Principals’ Association was set to make official early on Monday.

Otter girls' drop final two games heading into basketball playoffs

FAIR HAVEN — The Otter Valley Union High School dropped its final two games of the regular season late last week to finish at 3-17.

It appears the Otters will be the No. 16 seed in the Division II playoffs and play at No. 1 Lake Region (18-2) early this week. The Vermont Principals’ Association was set to announce pairings early on Monday.

MUHS boys' hockey splits a pair; sits 6th in Division II

SWANTON — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team split a pair of road games last week and stands in sixth place in Division II with one game to go. The Vermont Principals’ Association will announce playoff pairings on Thursday.

The 11-6-2 Tigers have a chance to pick up points with a road win on Wednesday, when they visit Northfield (6-12). After last week’s results, they have defeated every team above them in the standings except fifth-place U-32.

On the Ball: Winslow reaches 1,000 points

WOODSTOCK — Otter Valley Union High School senior boys’ basketball player John Winslow reached the 1,000-point milestone in a Wednesday night game played at Woodstock.  

Winslow, a three-sport standout at OV, scored his 1,000th point by sinking a third-period three-pointer. Overall, he scored 12 points to pump his career total up to 1,004 and join former teammate Ryan Kelley, who reached the 1,000-point plateau in 2013, as a quadruple-digit scorer. Prior to Kelley’s feat, the Otter who most recently became a 1,000-point scorer was Pat Tulley in 1998.

For graduation, VUHS seniors opt for 'morality' over tradition

VERGENNES — Since the school’s founding in 1959, Vergennes Union High School graduations have divided its senior classes by gender, assigning white robes to girls and blue robes to boys and requiring them to enter the ceremony from different sides of the school gym.

After a January prompt from VUHS Principal Stephanie Taylor, a series of discussions on that tradition, and two votes, the members of the VUHS class of 2015 decided to change the final ritual of their high school career.

Tiger skiers compete in pursuit race

HUNTINGTON — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ and girls’ Nordic teams on Saturday competed at the Sleepy Hollow Nordic Center in a “pursuit race” that combined both of the sport’s disciplines, classic and freestyle skiing.

Competitors skied one 3-kilometer classic leg, stopped in a transition area to switch skis, then went back out to complete the race on a different 3K freestyle leg.

VUHS grapplers excel at tourney; Tigers win duals

VERGENNES — Five Vergennes Union High School wrestlers placed on Saturday at Mount Mansfield’s Jason Lowell Tournament as the Commodores took fifth out of 18 teams competing.

Brandon Cousino led the way by winning at 170 pounds, edging Spaulding’s Sam Kuckuk in the final, 7-5.

Also for VUHS, Trevon Smith was second at 126, Kyle Kingsley took third at 113, Ethan Reardon was fourth at 132, and Ryan Paquin finished fourth at 182.

Ferrisburgh school directors seek 3 percent spending increase

FERRISBURGH — A year after watching a budget defeat for the first time in recent memory, the Ferrisburgh Central School board has adopted a $3.62 million budget proposal for the 2015-2016 school year that would, if approved, increase spending over the current level by 2.97 percent.
