Athletes win at state meet

EAST MONTPELIER — Led by three victories by Mount Abraham Union High School sophomore Lydia Pitts, local athletes combined for 11 event wins at Saturday’s Division II track and field championships, hosted by U-32 High School.

Middlebury fared best as a team, finishing third in both the girls and boys’ competitions. Buoyed by Pitts, the Eagle girls took fourth, and the Eagle boys’ were sixth. Vergennes scored points in one event in each competition: The Commodore girls were 12th, and they VUHS boys were 11th.

Mount Abe's married athletic directors made job-share a success

BRISTOL — No matter how much people have enjoyed a job over the years, a time can come when a new direction looks like a good idea.

At least that’s how married couple Jeff and Mary Stetson explained their decision to step down this June from their unique 25-year partnership as Mount Abraham Union High School’s co-athletic directors.

Jeff, 58, and Mary, 55, who will still teach part-time and coach at Mount Abe, can readily offer highlights from their years sharing the AD job.

New pumper fire truck sought for Vergennes

VERGENNES — On Tuesday, May 24, the Vergennes City Council discussed a sewer rate hike (see related story here) and also:

•  Heard from City Manager Mel Hawley that costs at the city’s recycling center could rise by around 10 percent, but that he did not have final numbers yet.

Tiger softball advances in playoffs

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School softball team, seeded No. 3 in the Division I playoffs, didn’t really bring its hitting shoes to its first-round game against No. 14 Champlain Valley on Tuesday, but the Tigers still had enough to take care of the Redhawks, 9-1.

The Tigers will next host No. 6 Brattleboro (13-4) in a game scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

Local connection sparks Panther women's lax to national title

PHILADELPHIA — The Middlebury women’s lacrosse team won its sixth NCAA Division III title and first since 2004 on Sunday, when the Panthers put the clamps on NESCAC rival Trinity in a final played a Talen Energy Stadium in Philadelphia, 9-5.

That victory followed the 22-1 Panthers’ convincing 16-11 win over top-seeded and undefeated Cortland State in Saturday’s semifinal.

A strong local connection helped the Panthers take the crown.

Boys' lax teams cruise in postseason openers

ADDISON COUNTY — The Middlebury, Mount Abraham and Vergennes union high school boys’ lacrosse teams all won big in first-round playoff games played on Tuesday afternoon and will play road games on Friday. 

Meanwhile, the 12-3 MUHS girls’ lacrosse team earned the No. 4 seed in Division I. The Tiger girls were set to host No. 13 Spaulding on Wednesday afternoon after the deadline for this edition of the Independent.

Track and field athletes qualify for New England meet

ESSEX — Many members of the Middlebury Union High School track and field team on Saturday qualified to compete at the upcoming New England championship meet, which will be held on June 11 in New Britain, Conn.

Before then, athletes from MUHS, Vergennes and Mount Abraham will head to U-32 High School in East Montpelier this Saturday for the Vermont Division II Championship Meet, with athletes from each school expected to excel in several events.

Mt. Abe and VUHS softball both win; now they will face off

ADDISON COUNTY — The No. 1 Mount Abraham and No. 8 Vergennes union high school softball teams each easily won first-round Division II playoff games on Tuesday, setting up a quarterfinal matchup between the two local rivals.

That game, scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Friday, will be a rematch of a regular season game in which the Commodores surprised the visiting Eagles, 8-2, one of Mount Abe’s three losses this spring. The others came to the Nos. 1 and 5 seeds in D-I.

Tiger boys' tennis falls in playoffs

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ tennis team’s outstanding season came to an end in a Division I quarterfinal on Saturday, when visiting No. 7 St. Johnsbury dealt the No. 2 Tigers their first loss, 5-2.

The Tigers finished at 10-1, while the Hilltoppers, who played more D-I competition this spring than the Tigers, advanced to the semifinals with an 11-3 record.

Vergennes sewer rates expected to increase

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen at their May 24 meeting said it was “inevitable” that city sewer rates would rise, probably this year, but if not this year certainly by next year.

City Manager Mel Hawley told council members that during the past couple of years he has used a year-end fund balance in the sewer budget that has been well over $100,000 to keep rates stable, but that fund balance now projects to be around $40,000 at the end of this fiscal year, June 30.
