Girls' soccer: No. 3 Eagle girls prevail, other local squads lose

ADDISON COUNTY — Only the Mount Abraham girls are still standing among local high school soccer teams, as the No. 3 Eagles won twice last week to advance to a Division II semifinal. The Eagles will host No. 7 Green Mountain Valley (5-2-4), which upset Middlebury on Saturday, on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Meanwhile, the MUHS girls, No. 2 in D-II, lost on penalty kicks in a quarterfinal, while the No. 14 Vergennes girls fell to the Eagles.

Otter field hockey slips past Eagles, 1-0

BRANDON — The No. 7 Mount Abraham Union High School field hockey team had host No. 2 Otter Valley on the ropes for much of Friday’s Division II quarterfinal, piling up a 13-5 edge in penalty corners, 7-1 in the first half.

But the Eagles couldn’t land punches on the stingy OV defense, and midway through the second half the 12-2 Otters came out swinging to earn a 1-0 win.

Last-second heroics lift Tiger field hockey to a win

MIDDLEBURY — With no time left on the clock in Saturday’s Division I quarterfinal against No. 5 South Burlington, the No. 4 Middlebury Union High School Tigers trailed the Rebels, 2-1, on Middlebury College’s Kohn Field.

When 4:09 more time had elapsed, the Tigers had won, 3-2, and earned a semifinal against undefeated No. 1 Essex on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the same site.

Chalk prevailed for the four local high school soccer teams that saw first-round action on Wednesday, as the No 2 Middlebury and No. 3 Mount Abraham girls advanced in Division II, while the No. 14 Vergennes girls lost to the Eagles, and in D-I boys’ action No. 1 South Burlington ousted No. 16 Middlebury.

City youth club seeks zoning OK for new headquarters

VERGENNES — The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Vergennes is continuing to work toward a potential purchase of a home at 75 Main St. as a new headquarters, in seeking both a city permit and funds for the project.

On Oct. 6, about two dozen people attended a Vergennes Development Review Board hearing on the proposed change of the property from a single-family home to a community center.

Clippings: Dogs offer entertainment, training

Between squirrels desperate to pack away enough food for the winter and dry leaves blowing across the sidewalk, fall is the most difficult time to walk our dogs.

Both Crown, a Lab/German pointer mix we’ve had four years or so, and Reina, a Lab/pit bull mix who’s been happily chewing our belongings for two years, have what my wife calls “strong prey drives.”

Field hockey: Eagles ground Cosmos in first-round game

BRISTOL — The No. 7 Mount Abraham Union High School field hockey team on Tuesday overwhelmed visiting No. 10 Springfield, 4-0, in a first-round Division II playoff game.

The 7-7 Eagles will next play at another area field hockey team, No. 2 Otter Valley (the 11-2 Marble Valley League A Division champ), in a Friday quarterfinal at 3:45 p.m.

The third local squad, Middlebury (7-4-2), earned the No. 4 seed in D-I and will host No. 5 South Burlington (8-5) on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Tiger boys cross country among top small-school NVAC teams

SWANTON — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ cross-country team on this past Saturday won the NVAC small-school championship, placing three runners in the top 10 to score 42 points and easily outpace second-place Rice (71) at an event hosted by Missisquoi.

Football teams set to open playoffs

ADDISON COUNTY — The area’s three high school football teams will open postseason play this weekend, two with top playoff seeds.

Middlebury (8-0) will open its title defense as the No. 1 seed in Division I. The defending champion Tigers will bring a 19-game winning streak into a quarterfinal matchup with No. 8 Champlain Valley (3-5). That game will be played at 7 p.m. on Friday at Doc Collins Field.

On the ball: Teams host playoff games

As expected, the Vermont Principals’ Association awarded top-four seeds this morning to the Middlebury Union High School girls’ soccer and field hockey teams, the Mount Abraham girls’ soccer squad, and the Otter Valley field hockey team. No formal announcement had been made as of late Monday morning, but the MUHS and OV football teams have earned the No. 1 seeds in Division I and III, respectively.

 

Those teams, plus the No. 7 Eagle field hockey team, will all be hosting playoff games this week:
