FERRISBURGH — Soon — possibly by the end of next week — a 10-year-old Ferrisburgh business will move about a third of a mile south along Route 7 to a new home next to The Dock Doctors.

The Ferrisburgh Bake Shop and Deli, founded in 2006 by Ferrisburgh resident Lisa Denton next to the town’s Route 7 post office, will take over renovated space that most recently housed convenience store/gas station/deli Vermont Energy Co., and before then the Little Otter General Store.

BRISTOL — Visiting Milton scored early and late to earn a 2-1 victory over the Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ soccer team on Tuesday, but Eagle Coach Mike Corey was not unhappy afterward about his inexperienced group’s effort.

The senior-laden Milton squad improved to 3-2, with those losses coming on the road in close games to Division I teams with winning records, while Corey’s Eagles — starting only three seniors — dropped to 2-2.

VERGENNES — After months of discussion, the Vergennes City Council last week decided to spend $4,000 on a professional evaluation of the city’s East Street swimming pool, as a number of residents have urged.

The council on Tuesday, Sept. 13, also decided another recreation facility issue it had debated for a shorter period of time, voting to spend $10,000 to resurface the nearby tennis courts, which double as a wintertime skating rink.

Andy Kirkaldy: Looking back at baseball prediction

Posted on September 22, 2016 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

Sports writers love to make predictions. Usually, they are forgotten. Unless, of course, they are proven correct.

In the interest of standing by mine right or wrong, I have made three public predictions about the Red Sox, two in writing, (one of which had more waffles than Rosie’s) and one verbal on Sept. 15 made in response to a question posed by Corey Buxton.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School football team had plenty of chances to win Friday night’s game against Brattleboro, or at least take a first-half lead that would have put tremendous pressure on a Colonel team that came to Doc Collins Field with a 0-2 record.

New Addison Town Plan offering changes

Posted on September 15, 2016 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

ADDISON — A half-dozen Addison residents turned out on Monday night at Addison Central School to learn more about and comment on a proposed town plan that could lay the groundwork for new zoning laws.

Those laws, to be created only after the selectboard ultimately adopts a plan, could allow for smaller lots in the town’s biggest zoning district and create permanent regulations at the town level on solar arrays and windmills. The town now has interim regulations on the siting of solar arrays that the selectboard adopted in July.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ soccer team couldn’t convert their many chances vs. visiting Mill River on Tuesday, while the Minutemen took advantage of one Tiger defensive lapse.

As a result, Mill River (3-0-1) escaped Fucile Field with a 1-0 victory despite the Tigers’ edge in play and territory, which can be fairly seen in their advantages of 22-8 in shots at goal and 10-4 in shots on goal.

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard decided at its Sept. 6 meeting it will not again allow the Vermont Senior Games to run bicycle races on town roads.

The organization’s four hours of mid-day races Aug. 27 on Little Chicago, Botsford and Hawkins roads generated one formal complaint from a resident as well as phone calls to board members, according to Selectboard Chairwoman Loretta Lawrence.

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School field hockey team flashed potential in its opener vs. visiting Division I Mount Mansfield on Friday, especially in the first half, but the Cougars fought back and prevailed in overtime, 2-1.

In that first half, the Eagles outshot the Cougars, 6-2, and took a 1-0 lead, and that shot total did not count two Mount Abe goals the officials waved off, one for a foot foul and one for being struck outside the scoring circle.

ADDISON — Addison residents on Monday will have a chance to learn more about and weigh in on a proposed new town plan, one that Addison Planning Commission members said will allow many residents more flexibility to develop small lots and will call for limits on commercial solar arrays, especially near Lake Champlain.

The planning commission will hold a hearing on the plan at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 12 at Addison Central School.
