Editorial: Governor Scott is spot on

Posted on April 12, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

As Gov. Phil Scott courageously held a very public signing of three gun control measures that increase oversight and inspection but only modestly restrict gun access, gun right hecklers called him “traitor” and booed at the mention of his administration also allocating $5 million for school safety.

Scott turned on those hecklers, confronting them directly: “If you want to boo on that, go ahead and boo.”

Editorial: China rises as Trump falls

Posted on April 12, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

Will Trump fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller? Can he? Or will Trump fire Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein so his successor can fire Mueller, as Rosenstein, a Republican appointed by Trump, has said he wouldn’t fire Mueller, another Republican, even if his boss, Trump, asked him. Would the obsequious Attorney General Jeff Sessions be allowed to stay? More importantly, will Robert Cohen, Trump’s fixer and one of his personal attorneys, take the fall for his boss or will he squeal in exchange for leniency?

Editorial: Of gun control and school finance

Posted on April 5, 2018 |

It’s been almost seven weeks since the Feb. 14 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, at which 17 students and teachers were gunned down by an 18-year-old former student with an assault rifle, who also seriously wounded 17 others. The next day, Vermont police arrested a former student at Fair Haven High School for  threatening to carry out a mass shooting there. In that case the police produced a journal from the student which detailed his deadly intent in no uncertain terms.

Editorial: A contrarian's stand on the dairy crisis

Posted on April 5, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

In a commentary in today’s paper, Leicester resident and former organic dairy farmer James Maroney offers a harsh — and lengthy — critique of the conventional dairy industry in Vermont. Maroney has long been an outspoken critic of conventional dairy and has his share of critics who vehemently reject his arguments — as one might expect in a state in which dairy farming has long dominated the agriculture scene.

A common lament among older generations (me included) is that schools these days don’t teach civics like they used to.

Editorial: You can't make this stuff up

Posted on March 29, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

No doubt our current president is a political lightning rod for liberals and moderates like no other Republican we have seen in recent times (President Nixon was a close second, but that’s been 48 years). But it’s one thing to be viscerally abhorrent to political opponents; it’s quite another to be harshly criticized by members of your own political party. When that’s the case, the warning signs of a president who poses a threat to our society are magnified.

Here, then, are a few comments from some unlikely sources:

Editorial: Marches protest gun violence, but why now?

Posted on March 26, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

In Middlebury, about 400 protesters for stricter gun control legislation, joined another 2,500 protesters in Montpelier, and hundreds of thousands of protesters in Washington, D.C., New York City, Chicago and more than 800 other places around the country and world in mass marches against gun violence.

It’s a movement started by students and led by students around the country — a grassroots protest that has turned into one of the largest political movements the country has seen since the Vietnam War protests of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Updated: Sale of Clark Hinsdale's iconic dairy farm is sign of the times

NordicFarm2171.jpg

CHARLOTTE — Clark Hinsdale III’s family has been farming on Vermont’s soils for seven generations in Addison and Chittenden counties.

A week ago (March 21), he auctioned off his herd of 250 milking cows, his farm implements and tools, his four robotic milkers and all the agricutural trappings of a lifetime in the dairy industry at one of Vermont’s most iconic dairy operations.

Editorial: A stark visual to dairy's reality

Posted on March 22, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

The decline in the number of dairy farms in Vermont has been steady for the past 70 years, even as milk output increases and the economic contribution to the state remains significant. Perhaps because dairy remains an economic powerhouse in the farm sector, we Vermonters aren’t as concerned as we might be to the problems dairy farmers are facing today.

Editorial: Uphill battle to come on gun-control bill

Posted on March 22, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

Vermont’s House of Representatives could vote on a significant gun-control bill as early as this Friday. That prospect follows narrow passage of S.55 by the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday. A less restrictive version of the bill had passed the Senate earlier this month, which means that if S.55 passes the full House, some version of the bill would likely be approved by the full Legislature and sent to Republican Gov. Phil Scott for his signature this session.
