Editorial: Sawyer's case and a legal precedent

Posted on April 26, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

In the case against Jack Sawyer, the Poultney teen who allegedly threatened to kill students at Fair Haven Union High School back in February, it’s not difficult to understand the defense’s argument. Of the four charges levied against Sawyer, two included attempted aggravated murder and attempted first-degree murder, even though (as far as we know or has been reported) he never set foot on the school grounds with weapons in his possession. That the state Supreme Court ruled with the defense and dropped the attempted murder charges is not that unexpected.

Editorial: ER costs inspire a letter of frustration

Posted on April 26, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

In today’s Addison Independent, Mr. Kris Diehl of Astoria, N.Y., pens an interesting letter that might be familiar to any of us who have visited the Emergency Room of a hospital seeking medical help. In his case, Mr. Diehl is outraged by charges he received from the ER at UVMHN/Porter Hospital for what was a minor concern: a tick bite.

Editorial: Bottom line on minimum wage

Posted on April 19, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

Bill H.302 — currently within the jurisdiction of the House Committee on General, Housing & Military Affairs — calls for raising the state’s minimum wage from the current $10.50 per hour to $15 per hour by 2026. A similar bill, S.40, passed the Senate back in mid-February. Even if supporters pass the House bill, and compromise legislation is reached with the Senate in time to send a bill to Gov. Scott’s desk, the governor has misgivings about the initiative and has said in the past that he would veto the legislation.

Editorial: Needless nastiness in Vermont

Posted on April 19, 2018 |
By Angelo Lynn

In a nod to the journalistic admonishment to always read past the headline (which is particularly troublesome in today’s era of reading just headlines, Twitter feeds and shout-outs on social media), there’s the story of Gov. Phil Scott meanly vetoing a bill that “regulates children’s exposure to toxic chemicals.” I mean, how could he! Everyone wants to limit children’s exposure to harmful substances; why not Vermont’s governor? And he seems so rational on so many other issues, like gun control.

Exactly.

Editorial: Addressing our cultural failure

The rule of law doesn’t always follow what appears to be common sense. In the Jack Sawyer case, for example, the Vermont Supreme Court ruled that just because the 18-year-old wrote in his journal that he was planning to carry out a mass shooting at his former high school in Fair Haven, Vt., that was not enough evidence to hold him without bail on attempted murder charges.

Editorial: Governor Scott is spot on

Posted on April 12, 2018 |

As Gov. Phil Scott courageously held a very public signing of three gun control measures that increase oversight and inspection but only modestly restrict gun access, gun right hecklers called him “traitor” and booed at the mention of his administration also allocating $5 million for school safety.

Scott turned on those hecklers, confronting them directly: “If you want to boo on that, go ahead and boo.”

Editorial: China rises as Trump falls

Posted on April 12, 2018 |

Will Trump fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller? Can he? Or will Trump fire Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein so his successor can fire Mueller, as Rosenstein, a Republican appointed by Trump, has said he wouldn’t fire Mueller, another Republican, even if his boss, Trump, asked him. Would the obsequious Attorney General Jeff Sessions be allowed to stay? More importantly, will Robert Cohen, Trump’s fixer and one of his personal attorneys, take the fall for his boss or will he squeal in exchange for leniency?

Editorial: Of gun control and school finance

Posted on April 5, 2018 |

It’s been almost seven weeks since the Feb. 14 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, at which 17 students and teachers were gunned down by an 18-year-old former student with an assault rifle, who also seriously wounded 17 others. The next day, Vermont police arrested a former student at Fair Haven High School for  threatening to carry out a mass shooting there. In that case the police produced a journal from the student which detailed his deadly intent in no uncertain terms.
