McKibben's new fable a witty tour de force on the allure of resistance

MIDDLEBURY — Using humor and wit in his debut novel, “Radio Free Vermont,” environmentalist and Ripton resident Bill McKibben pens a rollicking tale of resistance and political activism through the antics of a handful of Vermont characters whose capers start small then snowball into a full-blown movement to secede from the union — not focused on clever hijinks, but based on “facts, data, ideas.”

Editorial: Chili Fest is out, what's next?

Posted on November 30, 2017 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

In a letter elsewhere on this page, Cornwall resident Bill Bierderman laments the cancellation of the Chili Festival, usually held in March in Middlebury’s downtown. Folks from all over have gathered for a mid-winter chance to congregate, chat and interact in what has been a truly fun event.

Editorial: Middlebury's DID is a solid tax strategy to build upon

Posted on November 21, 2017 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

In an interesting discussion of the future of Middlebury’s Downtown Improvement District, members of the DID commission, the selectboard and area businesses were right last Tuesday night at the selectboard meeting to question a continuation of the status quo. As it has been for the past 21 years, additional taxes have been assessed on the 119 affected downtown commercial properties to make improvements to the downtown.

Editorial: Asian tour, climate denial, Roy Moore, tax cuts for wealthy define Trump’s vision of America

By Angelo S. Lynn

A year into his presidency, Trump made his first tour to Asian countries to test his macho and try to win leaders over with his old-boy charisma. He underwhelmed — was played for a fool in China and seen acting weakly subservient to Chinese President Xi Jinping, elevated the ruthless dictatorship of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, bailed on a meeting with the South Korean president at the DMZ and kowtowed to Russian president Vladimir Putin so obsequiously that cartoonists had a field day portraying Trump as Putin’s lap dog.

Editorial: Mount Abe vote a mixed message, cautionary tale

Posted on November 13, 2017 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

On Thursday, Nov. 2, not Tuesday, Nov. 7 as I erroneously wrote in a prior editorial, Mount Abraham voters rejected a $36.6 million bond to extensively renovate the high school by a 93-vote margin, 1,261 to 1,168. The question now, according to school officials and members of the renovation committee, is not “what next” — but when should the next vote be and for how much.

Caveat emptor. It’s Latin for “Let the buyer beware.” For most of modern history the term has been applied to real property (for example, the snake ointment sold by Dr. Marvel at the carnival), but today the most apt usage may be with the dissemination of information.

Editorial: Why a 'No' vote on pipeline easement hurts Middlebury

Posted on November 3, 2017 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Next Tuesday, Nov. 7, Middlebury residents will hold a special vote on a single article: Whether to approve the current easement arrangement, as proposed by the Middlebury selectboard, with Vermont Gas Systems across three small parking lots within the downtown. (See our most recent story by clicking here.)

We urge residents to vote “yes.”

Here’s why:

Editorial: Crucial vote for Mount Abe impacts future of its five towns

Posted on November 2, 2017 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

For much of the past decade, residents of the five towns that comprise the Mount Abraham Union High School district have discussed various ways to solve the facility’s shortcomings. There have been piecemeal patches, which have included pricey fixes, yet the overall deterioration of the high school building today is beyond dispute. Action needs to be taken.

Editorial: Vt. Gas easements and the law of unintended consequences

In public policy, what seems simple is not always so.

Such is the case with the proposed article facing Middlebury voters via Australian ballot on Nov. 7, which asks if voters “shall approve the current Deed of Easement agreements as approved by the Select board at their meeting on June 27 2017, and convey three land easements (one behind the town office and Ilsley library, one near Mister Ups Restaurant, and one on Mill Street) to Vermont Gas Systems?”

Editorial: Exciting news, big possibilities for former Greg's

Posted on October 19, 2017 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

That the former site of Greg’s Grocery in Middlebury may soon see another grocery in that location is exciting news for many local patrons of the former grocery. It long had served the northern end of town and the hundreds of workers who routinely use Exchange Street en route to their jobs in what is Middlebury’s industrial and commercial park.

As commercial neighbors (being located two blocks away in the Marble Works Business District, we’re as eager as most to see a new grocery revived in that location.
