Editorial: Let's embrace this

Posted on January 20, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

What do towns need to thrive in today’s global economy? How do we counter the loss of manufacturing jobs? How do we lay a solid economic foundation for tomorrow’s economy?

How do we prepare for things that we cannot yet know?

Here’s a suggestion: Let’s be part of communities that move forward.

Forget the details for a moment; embrace the concept.

What’s exciting in agricultural policy today is the culminating effort to put into action former Rep. Chris Bray’s, D-New Haven, “farm to plate” initiative.

Editorial: A warning shot for the GOP

Posted on January 13, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

If Republicans don’t think the calls to violence from Republican politicians — ranging from Sarah Palin to Tea Party favorite Rep. Michele Bachman, R-Minnesota — have a caustic and negative effect on the nation’s political discourse, perhaps they should tune into what just happened among a handful of Republican party officials there: they resigned out of fear of their personal lives and because of how rightwing Tea Party members were treating moderate Republicans.

MIDDLEBURY — With expectations to triple production over the next several years, Green Mountain Beverage CEO Bret Williams confirmed Tuesday that the hard cider company plans later this year to move from Pond Lane into much larger headquarters — the Connor Homes building on Route 7 in Middlebury.

Connor Homes will move into the Vermont Tubbs complex in Brandon within the next several weeks.

Editorial: Dear Gov: Spread your passion

Posted on January 10, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

How will Gov. Peter Shumlin make up a $150 million budget deficit, grow jobs, initiate a renaissance in Vermont agriculture, improve educational outcomes, expand broadband to the last mile and reform the state’s health care system to stop double-digit cost increases year after year — and do it all without raising broad-based taxes?

Editorial: Middlebury's economic future: Keep status quo or be proactive

Posted on January 6, 2011 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Middlebury residents have received a real bargain from town taxes during the past two years as taxpayers have benefited from the same level of services with no additional tax increases. Think of that. While food prices have gone up, health care has skyrocketed 20 to 30 percent, and most other expenses have seen inflationary hikes of 4 percent or more, town taxes held steady.

It is not surprising, then, to see a projected increase of 2.13 cents on the municipal tax rate in the draft budget, and possibly more if the select board or townspeople think additional town spending is beneficial.

Resolutions for the benefit of all

Posted on January 3, 2011 |

As we begin the New Year, let us — as Vermonters and residents of Addison County — resolve to:

• Redouble our individual efforts to give back to our state and communities, not in some vague notion of being a responsible citizen, but through specific actions to improve the lives of our neighbors or the betterment of the larger community.

Clippings: Happy greetings from a gruff codger

Posted on December 30, 2010 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

“Have a happy, happy!”

The emphasis was always on the second “happy” and it was said, back in the mid-’70s, by my climbing buddy’s dad. He loved saying it, as if it were his own contribution to the nation’s lexicon — “Have a happy, happy!”

It was a New Year’s Day greeting, of course, although Lou said it throughout the year whenever the mood struck him, which wasn’t, by the way, that often.

Editorial: A New Year's resolve

Posted on December 30, 2010 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

As America greets the New Year, we wonder if this nation has the collective resolve to true our wayward ship, to shake off the doldrums, renew our spirit of individual responsibility and regain our status as the inspirational leader in the world of new ideas.

To do that, we would first need to pay less heed to the naysayers, to honor those who seek to improve their communities and the common good — not those who benefit at the expense of others to the detriment of the national character and strength.

Governor-elect sets his priorities for term

Posted on December 23, 2010 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

MIDDLEBURY — Ask Gov.-elect Peter Shumlin what’s on his mind as he prepares to take over the reins of state government on Jan. 6, and he’ll tell you about tackling the biggest battles: getting broadband to every last mile in Vermont; getting health care costs under control; figuring out how to pay for the early education and corrections initiatives he proposed during the campaign; and reducing a projected $150 million deficit so he can balance the next state budget.

He’ll also tell you that none of it will be easy.
