Crisp fall days still great for camping

Campin in the fall .jpg

The nights are cooler, the days are shorter and winter is just around the corner. But just because summer is on its way out doesn’t mean you have to retire your outdoor gear quite yet.

Summer is a popular time to hit the trails with friends and family for an overnight camping trip, but fall can be just as enjoyable. Crisp air, fiery foliage, less foot traffic and a dwindling mosquito population makes fall one of the best seasons to spend outdoors.

MIDDLEBURY — The idea came to Amy Sheldon when she was living in Middlebury and walking to Chipman Hill each morning before coming to work. Sheldon noticed that, more often than not, she was the only person using the small stretch of trail in east Middlebury.

BRISTOL — After a day of luaus and roving through Hawaii’s scenic vistas, Jim and Jennifer Vyhnak ducked into the first place they saw with air conditioning: Scotty’s Music shop in Kalaheo, Hawaii. Not only did the shop have air conditioning, but hanging just beyond the door were walls of peculiar-looking instruments. The shop owner immediately plucked one of the “miniature guitars” off the wall and handed it to the couple.

“Almost every tourist gets a ukulele,” she told Jim. “But few ever actually play it.”

CORNWALL — Sara Daly, 37, at five-foot-four and the mother of two, seems an unlikely fist thrower. As co-founder of Waterfalls Day Spa in Middlebury and Waterfalls at Basin Harbor Club in Ferrisburgh, Daly spends her days surrounded by beauty and relaxation.

Nevertheless, she has put in nearly a year of serious training for the Golden Gloves boxing tournament that will take place at the Memorial Auditorium in Burlington early next year.

Snaphots: John Lee

Posted on August 23, 2009 |

John Lee fought many battles, braving hand-to-hand combat with steely sabers and charging horses — the kinds of battles fought more than a hundred years ago.

Lee doesn’t know why he became a Civil War reenactor in 1996, only that it “was just something that was inside [him], like anything else.” And though he has spent the past three years away from reenacting to become a certified nurse, Lee stormed the battlefield for about eight years as a part of the First Vermont Cavalry Company K.

Snapshots: Hank Dimuzio

Two years ago a Valentine’s Day blizzard swept through Middlebury, leaving behind a wall of snow.

For Hank Dimuzio, this was a problem.

His eight-foot high wire fences, designed to keep his herd of fallow deer inside, now rose a stunted four feet to Dimuzio’s shoulder as the snow created an icy stepladder to the other side. Dimuzio was astonished to find most of his herd huddled under their shelter near the top of his farm. But others were stranded on the outskirts of the far paddock where a grove of evergreens provided shelter.

Middlebury selectmen hike water, sewer rates

By Chelsey Pletts

MIDDLEBURY — Ninety percent of Middlebury water and sewer users will see an increase in rates in the fourth quarter of this year, after Middlebury selectmen approved a new rate structure Monday.

Currently, minimum rate users are charged for 7,500 gallons of water and close to one-third of these users are not using the full 7,5000 gallons.

The present water rate is $2.85 per 1,000 gallons used; with a minimum charge for 7,500 gallons that works out to $21.38 for anything up to 7,500 gallons.

MIDDLEBURY — A brewery’s backyard might seem like an unlikely location for a community garden. But when Otter Creek Brewing volunteered the land behind their facility in Middlebury last year, county residents of all shapes and sizes jumped on board to begin planning what is now the Otter Creek Organic Community Garden.

CORNWALL — For Liz Holm, gardening is a creative outlet, and though she says she is no artist, her beautifully structured Cornwall garden is pretty enough for any garden painting.

Holm’s garden spans across her backyard in several well-kept plots, each home to a variety of flowers and trees that serves specific purposes.

Lapham15.jpg

SHOREHAM — Martha Lapham of Shoreham is modest about her gardens — several plots of brimming flowerbeds, a vegetable garden and various climbing and potted plants. But as unassuming as the longtime gardener may be, the lively blooms on her Shoreham property speak for themselves.
