n Bird lady bird trio.jpg

I don't remember when I fell in love with the birds.

As a small child I do remember often finding my mother leaning over the kitchen sink to get a better look out the window at some rare bird at the feeder, hushing us as we came in the room so as not to scare it away.

I was never very impressed at the time, but something happened along the way, and now I’m that crazy lady who feeds the birds religiously every morning so they keep coming to my feeders and keep nesting in my hedge.

SHOREHAM — Abby Goodrich and Joe Murphy grew up one town away from each other. She in Shoreham, he in Orwell. Abby’s mother, Leslie Goodrich, was Joe’s teacher in elementary school.

But despite their proximity, Abby and Joe never knew each other growing up. Kids from Shoreham travel to Middlebury for middle school and high school, those from Orwell go to Fair Haven.

Instead, the two met years later at a wedding.

Abby had been hired as a wedding photographer for the event. Joe was the best man.

MIDDLEBURY — It doesn’t get much more intimidating than the thought of bringing another human being into the world that is completely reliant upon you for keeping it alive.

For new parents, this thought — coupled with the enormous emotional and physical turbulence that comes with pregnancy — can be utterly destabilizing.

That’s one reason why parenting classes, books and clubs are so popular.

ADDISON COUNTY — As the holiday season wraps up, party schedules quiet down and the New Year brings reflection and contemplation, people tend to think about what patterns and behaviors they want to change and which they want to reinforce.

Nutrition and diet are often top of the list, especially following those binge-eating days of holiday gatherings when any sliver of dietary guidelines or self-control tend to get thrown out the window.

ADDISON COUNTY — Substance abuse and the debilitating affects that addiction can have on individuals and communities has been in the news a lot lately.

Decorations are more than simple objects

VERMONT — For many Americans, decorations have become popular for just about every holiday there is to celebrate; we love to pull out the Easter baskets, bunnies and eggs in the spring, then pack them away and replace them with flags for the Fourth, then witches and ghosts for Halloween, colorful ears of corn and gourds for Thanksgiving and then, of course come the winter holidays.

EastView Walk.png

MIDDLEBURY — Sometime around late winter when it was dark and cold and tough to motivate herself to get enough exercise, EastView resident Holly Puterbaugh started thinking of creative ways to get herself moving.

“I’m not too sure how the idea came to me, but I knew I needed a goal to get me to keep walking,” Puterbaugh said.

The idea was to walk to San Francisco. Not literally, mind you, but to track the steps and miles walked each day and map the progress until the goal was met.

MIDDLEBURY — Backyard chickens are pushing do-it-yourselfers to a whole new level.

In Vermont, we live amidst people who pride themselves on being able to paint their own home, fix their own toilet, file their own taxes and grow their own vegetables. Perhaps it’s a natural progression (or return to a trend) that people here would want to keep their own chickens, too.
