Middlebury man learns to deal with his body's sensitivity

MIDDLEBURY — Larry Plesent grew up in a suburb of New York City surrounded by chemicals. His parents were cigarette smokers and he can remember insect foggers being set off in the area that produced clouds of toxins. Plesent become a window cleaner to earn some extra money while he was in college and worked for seven years cleaning high-rise commercial buildings, exposing himself to even more toxic cleaning compounds.

He constantly had dry, itchy skin, but, generally, everything was fine.

Then, suddenly, it wasn’t.

What it really takes to be well is an open mind N0909P19004H.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Why is it so hard to go to a doctor, or change the patterns to better your health?

Why do we have the tendency to invent a rationale for why we hurt or try to explain why it’s OK that we’re feeling awful?

Don't choose 'easy': Retirement gave Ken Perine time for Long Trail trek

Ken Perine cover shot RGB.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — To many people, retirement provides the opportunity to rest and relax after a career (or series of careers) that had kept them running and dictating day-to-day choices for what can be 45 years or more.

Sitting, resting and relaxing is what they crave most. Luxuries like reading novels and newspapers become easy to fit in, hobbies like knitting or exploring art are the center of attention, time to prepare delicious meals that previously were too rushed through is easy to come by.

Opinion: Our sweet ride has turned sour

VWandChristie9066.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — In June of this year I became a very proud owner of a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen TDI.

Our search for a vehicle was long and arduous. The cars in our driveway had always been at least 10 years old and only moderately reliable. But we were getting tired of the trips to the mechanic’s and the “adventure” of possible breakdowns everywhere we went.

With a Toyota Tacoma pick-up for weekend warrior projects and four-wheel drive, we focused on something that was more compact and could achieve better fuel efficiency.

Shy dog takes major leap to self confidence

Super Trudy 2.jpg

Trudy is a border collie mix whom we adopted four years ago when living in Vancouver, British Columbia.

When she first came to live with us, Trudy was prohibitively shy — she would roll on her back submissively when meeting any new person or even at the sight of another dog. It made it nearly impossible to take her out of the house.

Over the years and with plenty of exposure to love and attention, Trudy has become a different dog.

Color and whimsy inhabit work of 77-year-old artist

Posted on June 1, 2015 |

maxine IMG_0296.jpg

“The secret is you have to keep your head going,” says 77-year-old Maxine Davis, a retired psychologist from Ferrisburgh who now spends much of her time making art. “You have to keep doing things, going after things, being curious.”

Davis’ art medium is glass, although she has experimented over the years with painting, fiber arts and other crafts. She has a home studio that her husband (who will be 90 years old this summer) built as a small addition to the house initially and then extended as Maxine’s passion grew.

Hobbies keep you young

SeniorWalk8323.jpg

As the prospect for retirement nears, whether you’re 63 or 80, hobbies and pastimes become more and more priceless in terms of personal enjoyment and fulfillment. The challenge is to pursue ones that last a lifetime.

Power weight-lifting is out after age 70 or so for most, but bird-watching is definitely in and, like gardening, can have moments of adventure, excitement and physical activity, not to mention years of satisfaction.

Ilsley Library's gardens have a special keeper

Anna Benson 1.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Anna Rose Benson has been meticulously tending to the gardens around the Ilsley Public Library in downtown Middlebury since the early 2000s.

Her love for the gardens is contagious; she radiates joy each minute she spends planning the space, digging the soil and encouraging each bud and blossom with her care.

“Do you know the book ‘Corduroy’ about the bear?” Benson asked. In the book a teddy bear named Corduroy waits on the shelf in a department store for someone to come and take him home.

Pets bring joy to local workplaces and increase productivity

Pets in the workplace Boomer and Ladybug.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Animal lovers will often describe time spent around their beloved pets as therapeutic, calming, uplifting and stress-relieving.

For folks that leave their pets at home during the workday, there’s often a sense of hurry when leaving the office so as to give a friendly hello to that familiar face that’s waiting to greet one at the door.

Increasingly, however, workplaces are opening their doors and their policies to pets at work and are seeing some positive results.

Elisabeth: Roch's sweet ride

Roch with Elisabeth_039.jpg

Chuck Miller wrote about it in his 1956 song “bright red convertible”.

Prince wrote about it in “little red corvette” in 1986.

There’s just something alluring about a little red car that few can deny. It always catches the eye and makes both women and men swoon.

One such local beauty belongs to Rock MacIntyre of MacIntyre Fuels in Middlebury. “Her name is Elisabeth — or Betty,”MacIntyre says, “with the top down.”
