ORWELL — The breakfast crowd at Pam’s Country Kitchen in Orwell found the pancakes to have a slightly bittersweet taste on Monday morning.

No, Pam LaDuc’s batter and the Vermont maple syrup were, as usual, on point.

It’s just that the regular customers — some of whom have been eating at the folksy diner on Main Street three or four times a week for more than a decade — knew that their go-to hub for good grub and gossip would be closing its doors for good after the last of Monday’s java had been drained from the pot.

MIDDLEBURY — The Green Mountain Care Board (GMCB) on Wednesday, Aug. 26, was scheduled to review a proposed fiscal year 2016 Porter Medical Center (PMC) budget of $77,254,719, representing a 3.1 percent increase in spending that among other things reflects a bigger commitment in helping opiate addicts, an ongoing investment in health care technology, and the refinancing of the organization’s debt at a more favorable rate.

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central Supervisory Union is kicking off the 2015-2016 academic year with a first-ever strategic plan and the organization of a committee that will help the Middlebury-area school district comply with a new state directive to form a single school board that would have oversight over a single education budget for what would be a consolidated K-12 district.

MIDDLEBURY — Franklin Dean-Farrar is taking a stand for the future health of the American office worker.

MIDDLEBURY — We’ve all seen footage of what happens to a stranded car sitting in the path of an oncoming freight train.

The freight train always wins.

And when it comes to a dispute between a municipality and a freight train, the train seems to have the advantage — a likelihood that Middlebury officials and merchants are learning in their call for modifications to the Vermont Rail Systems (VRS) train schedules during the upcoming replacement of two downtown rail overpasses.
