'Addison Natural Gas Project' takes new steps forward

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Gas has hired an engineering firm to further refine its plans to extend natural gas service from Chittenden County into Middlebury and Vergennes and has begun to contact potentially affected property owners along the project route in anticipation of filing its final application with Vermont Public Service Board (PSB) before the end of the year.

New gallery to exhibit experimental artwork

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury artist Rachel Baird has always dreamed of running her own gallery in which to exhibit inspiring examples of modern and experimental art.

Her dream will officially come true this Friday, July 13, when ZoneThree Gallery marks its grand opening in Middlebury’s Marble Works district with an exhibit featuring paintings by Whiting-based artist Graziella Weber-Grassi.

Middlebury, Lodge settle property appraisal dispute

MIDDLBURY — The Middlebury selectboard and the Lodge at Otter Creek have settled a property assessment dispute relating to the retirement community’s land and buildings off Lodge Road.

The selectboard on Tuesday unanimously agreed to accept a settlement offer from the Lodge that its property be assessed by the town at $17 million, according to Middlebury Assistant Town Manager Kathleen Ramsay.

Middlebury riverfront upgrades to begin soon

MIDDLEBURY — Construction is slated to begin next month on a project that aims to beautify and improve public access to the riverfront area of Middlebury’s Marble Works complex, which fronts the Otter Creek falls.

It was last February that the Middlebury selectboard agreed to earmark $70,000 from the town’s conservation fund to improve the riverfront, a magnet for tourists seeking views of the spectacular falls. Such a project, officials noted, would also enhance the shopping experience for folks at the Marble Works and in the rest of downtown Middlebury.

Teen plans soccer tourney to raise AIDS awareness in Africa

MIDDLEBURY — Kelsey Smith has gotten a kick out of soccer ever since she was 5 years old. Now 14 and a standout player, Smith has decided to put her favorite sport to use to help save the lives of young people on the other side of the globe.

Smith is organizing an Aug. 5 soccer tournament in Middlebury that will raise money for AIDS and HIV awareness programs for youths in Africa.

Holzapfel back in running for Addison-3 House seat

Ripton preparing for PACE

RIPTON — Ripton officials are getting their town ready to participate in the Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) program, which provides renewable energy incentives for local residents. With that in mind, the Ripton selectboard recently adopted a PACE program description and guidelines for the program. Efficiency Vermont will administer the program for the town.

The selectboard is considering having the Addison County Sheriff’s Department periodically monitor the town shed in wake of unauthorized dumping of trash at that location between recycling dates.

Salisbury man takes on Jewett

SALISBURY — As a self-employed paint contractor, Salisbury resident Tim Ryan has navigated through some choppy financial waters during the past four years while the economy has faltered.

And through it all, Ryan believes his fortunes — and those of other small business owners — could have been improved if state government had done more to relieve the tax burden and reduce regulations on struggling enterprises.

Now Ryan, 45, has decided he will try to change state economic development policy from within.

Two locals to serve on search and rescue panel

MIDDLEBURY — Two Addison County residents will help draft a new Vermont search-and-rescue policy in the aftermath of the Levi Duclos tragedy.

Participating on the new search and rescue committee created by the Legislature that will help craft that policy will be Rep. Willem Jewett, D-Ripton, and David Shaw, assistant chief of the Middlebury Volunteer Fire Department.
