Sen. Giard won't seek another term

BRIDPORT — Sen. Harold Giard, D-Bridport, who has represented Addison County and Brandon in the state senate for the past eight years, will not seek a fifth consecutive term in the state’s highest chamber this November.

Giard confirmed this news during an interview with the Addison Independent late Wednesday afternoon. He said his decision was made out of respect for Vermont’s citizen Legislature and out of a desire to allow someone else to serve in a role he has found so fulfilling during the past eight years.

BRISTOL — Mount Abraham Union High School on Saturday sent 143 freshly minted graduates into the world with good wishes wrapped in prose, song and the letter “P.”

“Prepare yourself for a panoramic, pragmatic, participatory promenade through powerful, profound prose that may seem pedantic, and please refrain from propelling projectiles until the pronounced peroration point prevails,” graduation speaker Scott Beckwith, an MAUHS social studies teacher, urged the seniors in an alliterative tongue twister.

High bids to delay South Street work

Posted on June 14, 2012 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The town of Middlebury will delay major reconstruction of South Street in wake of much higher-than-anticipated bids for the work, though the selectboard is reviewing some traffic calming measures that could be installed on the busy road in the meantime.

South Street and Green Mountain Place had been in line for a major overhaul, in large part to allow for replacement of water and sewer infrastructure. The surface of South Street has also fallen into disrepair over the years.

MIDDLEBURY — A hospital can be an intimidating and foreboding place for those who first cross the threshold looking for a sick loved one somewhere in a veritable honeycomb of rooms.

Porter Hospital is no impersonal honeycomb, but visitors can still be anxious — until they see Mary Baker. It is then that furrowed brows become less crinkled and destinations become more clear as Baker smiles reassuringly, issues a warm welcome and asks if she can help.

And she invariably can.

Democrats, GOP endorse Keeler for sheriff

By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County Democratic Committee voted overwhelmingly on Monday to endorse Don Keeler as sheriff, a position the longtime deputy has held on an acting basis since the death of Sheriff James Coons on April 16.

The Democrats’ voice vote appears to leave the road wide open for Keeler to secure the appointment, expected to be made by Gov. Peter Shumlin. The Addison County Republican Committee had previously endorsed Keeler.

Middlebury draft town plan draws concerns

Posted on June 11, 2012 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Planning Commission members will take another close look at the draft 2012 town plan in wake of comments from several local businesspeople and citizens who are calling the 199-page document too lengthy, prescriptive and not welcoming enough to prospective entrepreneurs.

Those kinds of comments — along with some positive ones — have reached commission members in recent days by e-mail and through testimony delivered at well-attended public hearings the panel held at Middlebury’s Ilsley Library on June 4 and 6.

RIPTON — Ripton Elementary School will soon prove that it is literally willing to go the distance to stabilize — and even increase — its student enrollment.

MIDDLEBURY — Life can take you down some bumpy and trying paths, and Megan Coon has the bruises to prove it.

She thought she had her life all mapped out.

After graduating from Middlebury Union High School in 2003, Coon enrolled at Clinton Community College in Plattsburgh.

“I wasn’t mature enough to finish,” Coon lamented. “I did one-and-a-half years, then I decided to take some time to grow up and figure out what I wanted to do.”
