Major changes in the works for downtown Middlebury retail scene

MIDDLEBURY — This summer is bringing some major retail changes to downtown Middlebury, with two Main Street stores moving; another closing; and a new shop opening on Merchants Row.

Conducting moving sales right now are Green Mountain Shoe & Apparel and Otter Creek Used Books, both located in the Lazarus Building at the corner of Main Street and Printer’s Alley.

MALT to take stock in its future

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Area Land Trust (MALT) trustees will meet next month to discuss future operations of the organization in wake of the resignation of its most recent executive director, Josh Phillips.

Trustees stressed that MALT will continue what has been a 24-year run as a local conservation organization, but noted that Phillips’ departure presents a good opportunity for some bureaucratic introspection.

Three vie for Ferrisburgh post

FERRISBURGH — Three Ferrisburgh residents have stepped forward offering to fill the seven-month balance of a term recently vacated by Selectman Bob Jenkins, who wants to devote more time to local fire department issues.

The Ferrisburgh selectboard will interview all three candidates on Tuesday, July 12, beginning at 5 p.m. at the town offices. Selectboard Chairwoman Loretta Lawrence anticipates she and her colleagues will select a candidate that evening, following the interviews.

Courthouse shuffles current tenants, adds new ones

MIDDLEBURY — The Frank Mahady Courthouse in Middlebury will be even busier than usual this week. No, officials aren’t anticipating a spike in legal cases; rather, they will be in the midst of a major reorganization of services within the 40,000-square-foot building.

State panel proposes adding Charlotte to county Senate district

Porter Hospital budget calls for 10% hike

MIDDLEBURY — State officials are reviewing a proposed fiscal year 2012 Porter Hospital operating budget of $65.9 million that would require less than a 2-percent increase in net revenues, but necessitate a 10.3-percent rise in the rates it would have to charge for procedures.

Work pace quickens on Champlain Bridge

ADDISON — Recent flooding and high water levels on Lake Champlain have put a crimp in the construction of the new bridge linking West Addison to Crown Point, New York, though transportation officials said they are still driving for an Oct. 9 opening for the $70 million span.

“We have had to contend with the flood conditions and they have had an impact on our progress,” said John Grady, construction engineer for the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT).

New brewery, school proposed

MIDDLEBURY — A Salisbury couple is seeking permission to transform the former Dundon Plumbing & Heating headquarters at 610 Route 7 south into a small brewery and trade school for aspiring beer producers.

Steve Parkes and Christine McKeever-Parkes are advancing the project, which would provide a base of operations for the American Brewers Guild (ABG) Brewing School. Steve Parkes — former brewmaster for Otter Creek/Wolavers Organic Beers — has been leading the ABG’s school since the late-1990s.

Middlebury solar array eyed

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard has unanimously endorsed a proposal to install a 650-panel, 150-kilowatt solar array project on municipal land behind the local police headquarters on Lucius Shaw Lane. Organizers hope to be producing energy by the end of the year.

The project, being spearheaded by the Acorn Energy Co-op, would generate an estimated 172,500 kWh of electricity each year — enough to provide electricity to 30 average-sized homes, according to organizers.

Ft. Ti ferry is back on the water

SHOREHAM — The Fort Ticonderoga Ferry has finally started its 2011 season after a seven-week, flood-related delay that has taken a financial toll on the system’s owners.

“Things seem to be going better right now,” said Alison Matot, who co-owns the ferry with her husband, Michael. The historic cable-drawn ferry links Shoreham with Ticonderoga, N.Y., across Lake Champlain. Were this a “normal” year, the Matots would have been able to fire up the ferry back in late April.
