Middlebury selectman look to trim spending proposal

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury officials will try to pare at least another $120,000 from a 2013-2014 municipal budget proposal in order to achieve the selectboard’s goal of limiting the spending plan’s impact on residents. The goal is an increase on the local property tax rate of no more than 5.5 cents while maintaining current services.

Middlebury zeros in on economic development post

MIDDLEBURY — A committee charged with recruiting Middlebury’s first-ever business development director will soon interview a fifth and final candidate before narrowing down the field and introducing a new hire as soon as Town Meeting Day.

“I think we are on a good path,” said John Tenny, a member of the Middlebury Business Development Fund Advisory Board.

“I think we have some very good candidates.”

Middlebury weighs in on natural gas pipeline plan

MIDDLEBURY — Members of the Middlebury selectboard last month signed a letter of support for Vermont Gas Systems’ proposal to extend its natural gas pipeline from Chittenden County to Middlebury and Vergennes.

The $72 million project, if approved by the Vermont Public Service Board and built out as planned by 2015, would save the approximately 2,100 eligible residential and business customers in Middlebury a combined total of $5 million per year compared to what they are currently paying for fuel oil, according to the company.

United Way lags in effort to reach $700,000 goal

MIDDLEBURY — The United Way of Addison County (UWAC) has reached the halfway mark in its 2012 effort to raise $700,000 for local nonprofit causes, and organizers of the annual fund drive will soon mount an all-out push to try and reach the goal by next March.

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central Supervisory Union’s search for a new superintendent will continue after a third bid to locate a top executive failed to woo a finalist on Friday, Dec. 21.

District officials confirmed late Friday afternoon that both finalists — Burlington School District Superintendent Jeanne Collins and John W. Johnson, an executive with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction — withdrew their names from consideration, citing personal reasons.

But when Rachel Wollum claims her cookies are “simply divine,” one can hardly accuse her of stretching the truth.

Not only do Rachel’s cookies taste heavenly, they are baked with love in the basement kitchen of Middlebury’s St. Mary’s Catholic Elementary School.

Police hope to solve 41-year mystery of missing student

MIDDLEBURY — Monday, Dec. 10, brought the 41st anniversary in the search for former Middlebury College student Lynne Schulze, and with it a new set of eyes to scan some new information in the mountainous case file accumulated over the years by the Middlebury Police Department.

Middlebury police Detective Kris Bowdish is the latest in a long line of local investigators to head up the probe into what happened to Schulze, a first-year student who disappeared from Middlebury College campus back on Dec. 10, 1971.
