MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury drivers last week got their first-ever opportunity to travel behind the town’s municipal building, as Academy Street officially opened to traffic in the first of what will be several changes in downtown traffic patterns this summer.

Academy Street is the new, one-way road linking College Street to Main Street. It is but one part of the $16 million Cross Street Bridge project scheduled for completion by the end of this October.

BRISTOL — The grandest entrances are usually reserved for the senior prom.

Not this year at Mount Abraham Union High School, where commencement speakers Geoff Booth and Caroline Camara roared up to the graduation stage on Saturday atop a Harley Davidson motorcycle and delivered a high-octane message to the 149 member of the class of 2010.

Midd. board urged to reject Fenn pit

Posted on June 17, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Around two dozen neighbors on Monday made their final appeal to the Middlebury Development Review Board (DRB) to deny a bid by the Fenn family to establish a gravel pit on a portion of a 70-acre parcel they own off Route 116, just north of Quarry Road.

The neighbors argued the pit proposal violates local zoning laws; would bring dust, toxic fumes and noise pollution to a residential area; and would set up the potential for collisions between trucks entering and exiting the site and motorists and cyclists negotiating busy Route 116.

VERGENNES — Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel this week was mourning the loss of his first police dog, Blade, who had to be euthanized due to rapidly failing health brought on by degenerative myelopathy.

German shepherds, as was Blade, are particularly susceptible to degenerative myelopathy, a progressive disease in the spinal cord in older dogs, Merkel said. It typically begins with the loss of coordination in the hind limbs and often progresses to paralysis.

MIDDLEBURY — With nomination petitions due this week, relatively few candidate petitions had been filed with district town clerks or Addison County Superior Court as the Addison Independent went to press on Friday.

But at least one local Vermont House district was shaping up as a fierce election battleground: Addison-4, the two-seat district that includes Bristol, Starksboro, Monkton and Lincoln.

The past decade saw him serve as Gov. James Douglas’s spokesman for six years before being named commissioner of the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation (FPR) in 2008. After serving an eventful 19-month stint as commissioner, Gibbs now hopes to climb another rung on the political ladder. He is in the midst in his first statewide campaign, competing for the post of Vermont Secretary of State.

CORNWALL — Jennifer Moeykens has seen two generations of several families pass through Cornwall’s elementary school during her 34 years there as a teacher.

She jokes that the reason she’s retiring this month is because she doesn’t want to score enough longevity points to see the third generation roll in. Joking aside, she’ll be leaving the school with fond memories and vows to remain active during the next phase of her life outside the classroom.

NEW HAVEN — A team of Winooski-based engineers is proposing to build one of the state’s largest solar farms on a 40-acre portion of a 180-acre parcel on the west side of Route 7, across from the Hill Top RV Center in New Haven.

The proposed project, on land owned by Albert and Gail Freyer, would feature 178 ground-mounted solar trackers with photovoltaic panels capable of harvesting enough energy to power 500 homes annually. It would also include an organic farm operation calling for sheep and goats to graze near the high-tech equipment.

Clippings: Son inspires father to go the distance

I always thought I’d be able to tell folks exactly where I was when I decided to run my first long-distance race. You know, one of those sobering, psych-yourself-up moments you never forget.

Turned out to be quite the anti-climax, really. We were riding in the car around four months ago when our son, Mark, blurted out, “Dad, we’re running the half-marathon in Burlington this May.”

Oh.

“Thanks for signing me up, son,” I believe I muttered under my breath. “Did you put me down for the firing squad, too?”
