Shoreham to vote on future of buildings

SHOREHAM — Shoreham voters will soon get a chance to decide whether the town should build new municipal offices or incorporate them into a Newton Academy re-build that would also include a community center.

Plans call for the Shoreham selectboard to prepare a list of three options to address the town’s quest for more municipal office space and to potentially fill the void left by the April 7 burning of historic Newton Academy on School Street.

Those options, according to Shoreham selectboard Chairman Paul Saenger, will include:

Wool wholesaler closing shop

Posted on June 3, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Only six months ago, the owner of Vermont Organic Fiber Co. (VOF) had high hopes of landing grant money that he said would have allowed him to expand operations and double his seven-person work force.

But last week saw VOF President Matthew Mole instead liquidating assets from the small Seymour Street-based enterprise he founded in 2000. Mole cited the recent recession and his inability to land critical economic development grants as the main reasons for his decision to close the wholesale supplier of yarns and fabrics made with certified organic wool.

Middlebury public works office to bear name of Cyr

Posted on May 24, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — By all accounts, the late Sonny Cyr would respond to pretty much any call for help at any time of day during his 42-year career with the Middlebury Department of Public Works.

Cyr’s history of dedication and self-sacrifice won him a lot of friends, who mourned the man’s passing this past January at the age of 67. Now those friends, with the hearty endorsement of Middlebury officials, will pay a lasting tribute to Cyr. On Wednesday, May 26, at 3 p.m., Middlebury will officially dedicate the Sonny Cyr Public Works Facility at 1020 Route 7 South.

MIDDLEBURY — Stewards of the Middlebury Community House are trying to boost residents’ awareness of, and investment in, a downtown architectural jewel that is beginning to show signs of wear and tear after almost two centuries of battering from the elements.

Built in 1816 near the Congregational Church of Middlebury at the corner of Main and Seymour streets, the bright yellow Middlebury Community House remains one of the best examples of post-colonial, Federal-style architecture left in town.

Lawmakers take stock of session

Posted on May 20, 2010 |

MONTPLIER — Area lawmakers cited advances in health care legislation; funding for the Champlain Bridge along with loans for businesses affected by its closure; and preservation of the Addison County Probate Court system as among several local victories scored during a money-strapped 2010 legislative session.

“I think that overall, this was a very successful session based on the circumstances in which we worked,” said Sen. Harold Giard, D-Bridport.

“When money is in short supply, it dominates the entire session.”
