What would Jesus do: Perfect Form

Posted on December 23, 2010 |
By Karl Lindholm

What indeed would Jesus do?

Jesus Shuttlesworth, that is. That’s the name of the character Ray Allen plays in the Spike Lee movie, “He Got Game.” It’s a compelling film, especially since the protagonist is played by a basketball player, not an actor. (Those with small hoop-crazed children might wait before ordering — it’s rated R.)

Taking a charge: Tales from the Nam

Posted on November 24, 2010 |
By Karl Lindholm

I hadn’t meant to wait so long to read “Tales from the Nam.”
“Tales from the Nam” is a first-hand look at the life of a “grunt” in the Vietnam War. It’s comprehensive and compelling, authentic, well researched, well remembered, and well recounted.
It was written by Dave Nicholson, my friend and basketball teammate from long ago at Middlebury (“Nick” to all who knew him then), and published in 2008.

McKillop: Best ever? Could be

Posted on October 28, 2010 |
By Karl Lindholm

“Watch this quarterback for us. He may be the best ever,” I instructed Jay Shapiro, class of 1977 at Middlebury (father of Melissa ’13), at the Middlebury-Amherst College football game on Parents’ Weekend this fall.
Skeptical, he asked, “Better than Peter Mackey?”
The next week, Jeff Mackay ’65 came through and I said the same thing to him. He replied, “Better than Charlie Brush?” acknowledging the best of his era.
Is Don McKillop, the Panther quarterback for the past four years, the best ever to play this position in over a century of football at the college?

Summer, fall football: Chill is in the air

Posted on September 30, 2010 |
By Karl Lindholm

We talk about the weather all the time in Vermont because we get so much of it.

Today is the last day in September, our best month. We claim it as autumn, but it’s really still summer, at least the first three weeks. Now, it’s officially fall, and has been for the past week.

September is mild, mostly, but there’s a crispness in the air that suggests the austerity to come. The first frost arrives in September. We start the day in fleeces and sweaters but often shed them by midday.

Put some perspective on sports

Just thinking:

Tiger: What will happen to Tiger Woods?

Two weeks ago, he finished 78th in a field of 80 in the Bridgestone Classic, a tournament he had won four years in a row prior to this year. Earlier in August, he tied for 28th place in the PGA Championship, his second worst showing in a major tournament in 12 years. Last weekend was better, a tie for 12th at the Barclay’s Championship. But still ... Tiger Woods: middle of the pack?

Nats' phenom: Best young pitcher ever?

Posted on August 5, 2010 |
By Karl Lindholm

Twenty-two-year-old Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg is a genuine phenom, whose arrival in baseball has come this summer with unmatched ballyhoo.

His highly anticipated first game this year in the majors on June 8 at Nationals Stadium was a debut beyond expectation: Strasburg struck out 14 batters in seven innings before a sell-out crowd of 40,315, leading the Nats to a 5-2 win over the Pirates.

The spirit and meaning of sports

Posted on July 8, 2010 |

Editor’s note: This spring Karl Lindholm was privileged to speak to Middlebury College athletes just prior to their graduation. Here are those remarks excerpted.

My favorite team is not the Red Sox or the Celtics — my favorite team is the Panthers of Middlebury College, or the Tigers of Middlebury Union High School.

Perfect, but not perfect: Pair of calls are blown

Posted on June 10, 2010 |
By Karl Lindholm

Last Wednesday night we were assembled in front of the tube watching the end of the Red Sox game, as we do most nights. It’s an after-dinner nocturnal ritual.

The Sox announcers informed us that Armando Galarraga of the Tigers was taking a perfect game into the ninth inning against the Cleveland Indians. Twenty-four Indians’ hitters had come up and all 24 had been set down. So we changed the channel to see if the young Tiger pitcher could close it out.

Good sports. Exciting.

Softball: Baseball for the girls

Posted on May 13, 2010 |
By Karl Lindholm

My daughter Annie, 12, has managed to resist the siren song of lacrosse in Middlebury and is playing seventh-grade softball this spring, under the tutelage of Brett Ringey, son of Mike — the patriarch of the Cornwall Ringeys, the first family of Addison County baseball (and now softball).

Mike has handed Annie the “tools of ignorance,” so now she is ensconced behind the plate as catcher. Her team, the Middlebury Union Middle School Tigers, have split their first two games, winning one and losing one.

'A gentle trinitarian mysticism'

Posted on April 15, 2010 |
By Karl Lindholm

You know, it’s not always easy being the “baseball guy” at one of the nation’s top institutions of learning.

But it’s easier now than it used to be. Cultural Studies are acknowledged as an important part of higher education. Popular culture, sports, movies and the like are now in liberal arts curricula.

The phrase, “A Gentle Trinitarian Mysticism,” comes from an essay on baseball by the Catholic philosopher and prolific writer, Michael Novak, in his book, “The Joy of Sports.”
