BRANDON — Faced with a state Education Fund shortfall of $47 million, officials in the Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union are preparing to make drastic cuts within the local Otter Valley Unified Union School District this coming budget season.

RNeSU Superintendent Jeanne Collins said in an interview late last month that the RNeSU Board wants to prepare taxpayers for a potential $1.6 million cut across the OVUU budget.

“The RNeSU Board wanted to let the taxpayers know what the budget landscape was early on,” Collins said.

RUTLAND/ADDISON COUNTIES — And just like that, fall is over.

An intense windstorm overnight Sunday denuded the autumn trees of their leaves in Vermont as a powerful low-pressure system fueled by the remnants of Tropical Storm Philippe carried 70-80 mph wind gusts that battered the state for hours overnight.

At first light Monday, roughly a third of Vermonters were without power as crews from Green Mountain Power and other power companies spread out across the state to repair downed lines and snapped power poles. Most of the trees were bare.

By Lee J. Kahrs

BRANDON — A planned 100-acre solar project on farmland in Brandon is now owned by a different company, and, if it is built, will be 25 percent smaller than originally planned.

Davenport Solar filed a notice of intent to file a petition with the Vermont Public Utility Commission, requesting approval to build the project, which has been downsized to 15-megawatts from the original 20-megawatt plan. A copy of the letter was sent to the state Agency of Natural Resources, the town of Brandon and the Rutland Regional Planning Commission on Sept. 29.

LEICESTER — The only reported case of rabies in Leicester this year was on Ferson Road, but one resident said she dealt with two rabid skunks there this summer.

Linda Moore said Monday that one of her sons, Brian Moore, shot and killed a skunk that was chasing his dog at his neighboring Ferson Road home on Aug. 28. She said the skunk was tested by the Vermont Department of Health and confirmed rabid.

But two days before that incident, she said she’s sure she had a rabid skunk on her own property nearby as well.

BRANDON — Chris Waddell knows all about challenges. He thrives on them. In fact, when life didn’t hand him enough of a challenge, he created his own.

Waddell was paralyzed from the waist down after a skiing accident on the first day on Christmas break from Middlebury College in 1988. He had been a promising member of the Middlebury College Ski Team, but all of that changed when his ski popped off and he fell, broke two vertebrae and damaged his spinal cord. He was 20 years old.
