WHITING/SUDBURY — There are three candidates vying for the principalship at the Sudbury and Whiting elementary schools, and parents will get a chance to meet them over two public forums in the next week.

Current Sudbury and Whiting Principal Ed Barnwell will retire in June, and Rutland Northeast Superintendent Jeanne Collins said she has three qualified candidates to choose from for Barnwell’s replacement.

LEICESTER — Residents around the Otter Valley Unified Union School District were shocked to read a letter to the editor last week stating that the beloved Harvest Program at Foxcroft Farm would be ending after almost two decades helping OV students who may not fit in a traditional classroom.

Harvest Program founder and Executive Director Anne Young explained in the letter that it had been a tough decision that was not based on financial need.

Katherine Arden and book.jpg

BRANDON — Katherine Burdine is living the dream of any writer who has ever toiled away in obscurity. Armed with a three-book deal from Random House, the 29-year-old is just weeks away from the release of her debut novel, “The Bear and the Nightingale,” on Jan, 10.

And she’s local. After spending the bulk of her twenties traveling, living and working everywhere from a macadamia nut farm in Hawaii to a boarding school in France, Burdine has settled in Brandon and is currently working on her second novel.

n3 Mumbai meets Brandon Tanvi Lonkar SLumdog2_CMYK.jpg

BRANDON — It was 82 degrees in Mumbai, India, on a recent Monday, and it was 12 degrees in Brandon, Vt. To say that Brandon is the polar opposite of Mumbai would be a pun and a truth.

So, why would a 21-year-old college student from Mumbai want to spend three weeks in Brandon?

“I’d never seen snow,” Tanvi Lonkar explained.

Fair enough.

It has snowed several times since she arrived in Brandon, and Lonkar is thrilled.

Late Poet Laureate Ruth Stone's Goshen home is coming back to life

Bianca Stone and house_6771.jpg

GOSHEN — Hathaway Road is straight and dirt, passing homesteads nestled up against the Green Mountain National Forest in Goshen. A beautiful meadow opens up, Mount Horrid above. The road continues and the forest closes back in around it and there it is on the left, the Ruth Stone House.

Prior to her death on Nov. 19, 2011, at the age of 96, it was not The Ruth Stone House, refuge of the former Vermont Poet Laureate; it was simply Ruth Stone’s house. And more than that, it was Stone’s home, her architectural soul, her muse.

Clippings: Challenge issued to Trump voters

I stood in front of the Pittsford Town Offices on Veterans Day with almost 100 other people at the dedication of the new Veterans Memorial. A fierce, cold wind whipped dead leaves in all directions, the temperature dropping by the minute. Flags were lowered and then raised above the new slab of marble etched with the words “Lest We Forget.”

Brandon seeks recreation options for kids after Boys and Girls Club closes

BRANDON — The Brandon Boys & Girls Club permanently closed its doors late last month; it was two months after suspending operations.

Now there are just some empty rooms at 25 Rossiter St. to show for a grassroots community effort that raised $150,000 to start a Boys & Girls Club in Brandon just seven years ago.

But another local effort may be gaining momentum to try and fill the void left by the club.

BRANDON — Route 7 motorists though Brandon may have noticed a change downtown.

Work on the Route 7 overflow culvert began in earnest two weeks ago, creating a new traffic pattern that has business owners at odds with town officials.

The work began on Oct. 12 and by the next morning, the west side of Center Street was cordoned off with construction fencing and both lanes of traffic were shifted east. Roughly 10 parking spaces from in front of the town office building to Kennedy Park were removed to make room for the northbound lane of traffic.

BRANDON — A floodplain restoration project has been approved by the Brandon Development Review Board, with conditions designed to address flooding concerns by abutting landowners.

The DRB issued its decision on Sept. 23, two months after the initial hearing on the application by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and property owners Jim and Lyn Des Marais. Since then, the board has conducted a site visit, then re-opened and closed the hearing on Sept. 24.
