RNeSU teachers sign a new three-year pact

BRANDON — Almost two years of negotiation have led not only to a new contract, but better relations between the Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union (RNeSU) and local teaching associations, the parties said.

RNeSU, the Rutland Northeast Education Association and the Otter Valley Teachers’ Association have agreed to a 1.6 percent increase on the base salary schedule for the current 2010-11 school year along with a 1.74 percent for 2011-12 and 2.37 percent for 2012-13.

BRANDON — Otter Valley Union High School Valedictorian Will Pearl’s message to his fellow classmates at graduation last Saturday in its simplest form was this: They matter.

“What I ask of you … is that you recognize your own importance in this web of interconnectedness that is our modern world,” he said before a packed gymnasium. “I ask that you do not be so foolish as to think that your actions have no impact on the unhalting wheel of progress.”

Rep. Welch calls for repeal of subsidies to ethanol industry

LAKE BOMOSEEN — Barb Woodard has seen firsthand the effects of ethanol on boat engines and it goes right to her bottom line.

“I think it’s a strong issue that needs to be addressed,” the co-owner of Woodard’s Marina said during a press conference hosted by Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., at the marina’s fuel dock last Thursday morning. “I would like to see a supply of non-ethanol fuel for recreational use.”

BRANDON — Want to get away without leaving Brandon? Lindy Brown has just the thing — reflexology.

This ancient art and science of manipulating the foot to stimulate different parts of the body and release tension has been around since ancient Egypt, and now it’s here in Brandon. A former pharmacy technician and LPN, Brown apprenticed with Middlebury Reflexologist Katherine Windham after hearing her speak at a women’s club meeting in her hometown of Orwell.

Cider maker nixes Connor Homes building sale

MIDDLEBURY — The discovery of environmental contamination at the Connor Homes building on Route 7 South in Middlebury has halted the planned sale of the 115,000-square-foot manufacturing plant to booming hard cider maker Green Mountain Beverage (GMB).

It also put on hold Connor Homes’ plans to lease the 131,000-square-foot former Tubbs furniture plant in the Brandon Industrial Park.

Leicester gears up for its 250th birthday celebration

LEICESTER — The town of Leicester will commence celebration of its 250th year with a community picnic, but that’s just the beginning.

Leicester selectboard chair Diane Benware said Monday that planning is ongoing and more ideas and participants are welcome.

“We’re looking at this picnic as being the kick-off,” Benware said.

Railroad lobby picks up steam

RUTLAND — There was a pro-rail rally in Rutland on Monday in honor of a federal official who came to see just how enthusiastic area and state business and government leaders were about the prospect of rail in the state’s western corridor.

Sewer problem halts Brandon health center

BRANDON — The Neshobe Family Practice medical building on the site of the former Brandon Training School had to shut down last week after a sewer problem followed by a water problem.

Brandon Town Manager Keith Arlund said he was alerted on March 10 that a lateral sewer line to the building adjacent to the Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union offices was compromised after a clean-out box came apart.

When public works crews were working to fix the sewer line, they discovered a leaking water main, Arlund said.

Former RNeSU leader joins education board

BRANDON — Bill Mathis can add another title to his extensive resume: Vermont State Board of Education (VSBE) member.

The former Rutland Northeast Superintendent was appointed by Gov. Peter Shumlin last week to complete four years of a six-year vacated by John Hall.

Mathis, 67, of Goshen retired from his post as superintendent of the Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union in June 2009 after 27 years on the job. He is the managing director of the National Education Policy Center, based at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Brandon selectman holds off electoral challenge

BRANDON — Brandon selectboard chairman Richard Baker won re-election by a decisive margin on Town Meeting Day, surviving a strong challenge from attorney Jim Leary.

The final vote count came in at 605-413 in Baker’s favor, ending a contentious race that many thought would be closer.
