ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont high school seniors with at least one college-educated parent are more likely to attend college than classmates who would be first-generation college students, a new report by the Vermont Student Assistant Corp. found.

A biannual survey by VSAC of a majority of the state’s high school seniors — including those in Addison County — revealed an “aspiration gap” between those who would be first- and second-generation college students.

Pipeline opponents ask Public Service Board to reopen proceedings

By Zach Despart

ADDISON COUNTY — Opponents of the Addison-Rutland Natural Gas Project have asked the Vermont Public Service Board to reexamine its approval of Phase I of the pipeline, while the Department of Public Service asked the Board not to delay construction of the project.

Three residents who live in towns affected by the pipeline, which would run from Colchester to Middlebury and Vergennes, on July 21 petitioned the Board to investigate the reasons behind a 40 percent project cost increase announced by Vermont Gas Systems earlier this month, and take appropriate action.

MONKTON — Water quality tests done by the Lewis Creek Association late last week have determined that two swimming sites in northern Addison County are currently unsafe for swimming.

The sites, along Lewis Creek at Route 7 in Ferrisburgh and Tyler Bridge Road in Monkton, tested for unsafe levels of E. coli.

The E. coli levels at Tyler Bridge were 686.7 MPN per 100ml, the unit of measurement used to detect E. coli colonies. The Route 7 site tested at 272.3 MPN per 100ml. The state standard is 77 MPN per 100ml.

Vermont Gas stands by Phase II pipeline cost estimate

Posted on July 21, 2014 |
By Zach Despart

ADDISON COUNTY — Weeks after announcing a hefty cost jump for Phase I of the Addison-Rutland Natural Gas Pipeline project, Vermont Gas Systems on Thursday said it wouldn’t amend cost projections the company submitted to the Public Service Board for Phase II of the project that would extend the pipeline from Middlebury to the International Paper plant in Ticonderoga, N.Y.

“We don’t have any plans to do that,” company spokesman Steve Wark said.

BRISTOL — The Bristol selectboard on Monday debated how to handle a discrepancy in town zoning maps that could delay the siting of a new firehouse.

A committee charged with researching a prime location for a new firehouse last month recommended to the selectboard that it be built on West Street. The site contains portions of the Bristol Recreation Club and a plot owned by Ed and Suzanne Shepard.

BRISTOL — At the barn at Baldwin Creek, the curtain will soon fall on a summer tradition for the final time. For 18 summers, Shakespeare in the Barn at Mary’s has staged plays in the makeshift theater, but this year will be the last.

It’s not dwindling attendance or financial woes that are the cause — in fact, organizers expect a full house for every performance this year. Rather, the folks who put on the plays said it was just time to call it quits.

Landowner, Vermont Gas at odds over easement

StGeorgeGuy2932.jpg

ST. GEORGE — A St. George landowner who lives along the route for Phase 1 of the Addison-Rutland Natural Gas project is at odds with Vermont Gas Systems over how much the company should pay to build the natural gas pipeline across his land.

Philip Beliveau is in the process of subdividing his 58-acre parcel into 19 parcels for a housing development, but Vermont Gas has assessed the value of his property as a singular parcel, and offered an easement payout based on that sum.

Vt Gas land acquisition costs Phase I bw.jpg

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont Gas Systems has already spent more than $1.5 million on securing land rights for Phase I of the Addison-Rutland Natural Gas Project, and last week announced it had increased its budget for land acquisitions by more than $1 million.

This increased projected cost is part of a $35.6 million cost hike for the entire project, a bill 40 percent higher than the company told the Public Service Board last February.
