ADDISON — Around 200 people filled the Addison Central School gym on Tuesday to plead for a new lake crossing near the now-closed Champlain Bridge, a task they said New York and Vermont transportation officials should have accomplished many days ago.

Route 116 pit hearing focuses on trucks

Posted on October 29, 2009 |
By John S. McCright

MIDDLEBURY — Is Route 116 north of the intersection with Quarry Road in Middlebury dangerous and would increased truck traffic from the proposed Fenn gravel pit, which would have an access road there, imperil others who use the road?

That was the crux of the discussion at a Monday evening hearing at which the Middlebury Development Review Board considered the application of Ronald and Susan Fenn to site a quarry on their property east of that stretch of Route 116, known locally as Case Street.

Snow geese population at Addison refuge plummets

Posted on October 26, 2009 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

ADDISON — The numbers of snow geese making annual stops at Addison’s Dead Creek Wildlife Management Area have dropped dramatically in the past decade, according to a Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department official who staffs the site.

This fall, the count of snow geese at the Route 17 location peaked at about 2,500, said department wildlife biologist David Sausville. That’s down from roughly 7,500 in 2006 and 2007 and from an estimated 20,000 in the year 2000.

Instead, Sausville said, more snow geese are congregating in corn stands in southern Canada and northern Vermont and New York.

ADDISON — Vermont transportation officials have declared an emergency in an effort to leverage more federal assistance in fixing the Champlain Bridge and in developing short-term solutions in getting commuters across Lake Champlain between Addison County, Vt., and Essex County, N.Y.

Vermont Transportation Secretary David Dill announced the emergency declaration at a press conference in Middlebury on Tuesday, five days after New York and Vermont authorities closed the Champlain Bridge when an inspection revealed substantial concrete deterioration to two of the span’s 12 piers.

Families stranded from their livelihoods

ADDISON — Robert Smith, co-owner of the Chimney Point Dairy Farm in Addison, has 100 acres of corn and 45 acres of soybeans growing on land a tantalizing six miles away in New York state.

“It’s so close you can almost taste it,” Smith said on Monday.

So close, yet so far.

Smith tried to harvest that corn last Friday, the day authorities closed both lanes of the Champlain Bridge due to concerns about the 80-year-old span’s structural supports. Officials would not make an exception to allow Smith’s agricultural equipment to cross over Lake Champlain on the bridge.

ADDISON — New York and Vermont transportation officials on Friday afternoon closed the Champlain Bridge because of safety concerns.

The move was taken after experts inspecting the 80-year-old span that links Addison, Vt., with Crown Point, N.Y., found a structural support that worried them.

“It was their decision to close it,” said John Zicconi, Vermont Agency of Transportation Director of Planning, Outreach and Community Affairs. Officials said two of the piers are deficient.

ADDISON — At the entrance to the DeVries family’s Dairydale Farm in Addison, there’s a sign up announcing to passersby that this tidy spread is a Vermont “Dairy of Distinction.”

The sign may still be there, but the farm’s 150 cows are gone.

Sam and Dave DeVries, brothers and partners in the Dairydale operation, milked their herd one last time on an afternoon in mid-June, and then ambled outside among the large crowd to watch their livelihood go up for auction.

ADDISON — Lee and Pat Kayhart have each slung a bucket or two during their 40 years of dairying at their farm in West Addison.

Now the couple is poised to retire, selling their business interests to their sons — but they are not done with buckets. Lee Kayhart has started crossing off items on his “bucket list,” an ambitious series of accomplishments he’d like to cross off before he is no longer able. Kayhart, 61, and a couple of his buddies recently crossed off a big one, in the form of a parachute jump not five miles from the Kayharts’ farm.

Updated: Crown Point Bridge reduced to one lane; officials cite deteriorating trusses

Posted on July 2, 2009 |
By John S. McCright and Andy Kirkaldy

ADDISON — Because of deteriorating steel trusses discovered in a June inspection, New York Department of Transportation officials were poised on Friday to limit traffic to one lane on the Lake Champlain Bridge that links Addison with Crown Point, N.Y.

Signals at either end of the span, a crucial link between Vermont and New York State used by up to 3,600 vehicles a day, will allow eastbound and westbound traffic to take turns crossing Lake Champlain. Work will last at least through the end of August and possibly longer, said NYDOT spokesman Peter Van Keuren.
