Bristol Police Log: Police respond to 3 a.m. vandalism incident

BRISTOL — At 9 a.m. on Nov. 1, an officer responded to the Bristol Federated Church at the corner of North and Church streets for a vandalism complaint.

Police were told that earlier that same morning at around 3:30 a.m., an unknown person or persons caused damage to the church sign. Neighbors reported being woken up by a noise and looking out to see two older teens or young adults run from the area and onto Garfield Street.

BRISTOL — Even after close to two decades of efforts to get local foods into local educational institutions, words like “fresh” and “tasty” are not universally applied to school cafeteria food.

Yet school nutrition guru Kathy Alexander continues to make Farm to School a centerpiece at Bristol-area schools and this year expanded that work into Vergennes-area schools.

Bristol selectboard discusses additional water line extension

Five-town food drive 'a great success'

BRISTOL — There is a lot more food on the shelves at the Have A Heart Food Shelf in Bristol thanks to the 10th annual Fill the Firehouse food drive 5 town firefighters organized and carried out on Oct. 28.

“The food drive was a great success,” said food shelf Director Rebecca Stude. “We took in over 5,650 pounds and $1,300.   All towns but one brought in more food this year.”

Vermont fire safety calendar to feature Bristol kids' art

MONTPELIER — Eight Bristol Elementary School third graders attended a ceremony at the Statehouse in Montpelier on Friday, Nov. 3, to celebrate the selection of their Fire Safety posters to be included in the Robert Howe Fire Safety Calendar.

This contest, held annually by the State of Vermont Division of Fire Safety, is open to third graders statewide and encourages children to become more aware of how to be safe with and prevent fire and related situations. Forty-seven schools participated this year, with over 900 entries.

Route 116 work continues on Starksboro to Bristol stretch

BRISTOL — The state road workers this week will continue their work paving Route 116 in the Bristol area.

On the six-and-a-half-mile stretch of Route 116 between Bristol village near the Lord’s Prayer Rock to just south of Robinson School in Starksboro scheduled work will include:

•  Paving of driveway entrances, weather permitting.

•  Placing gravel shoulders and general cleanup.

•  Line striping and shoulder work, weather permitting.

Bristol fire crew stops power line fire

BRISTOL — A Bristol family is grateful to the swift action of the Bristol Fire Department in its response to a blaze that started as a result of the Oct. 30 windstorm.

David A. Livingston said that the gales that reached 80 mph in many place in Vermont early last Monday pulled an electric cable from a barn at the home of his father, David, and his wife, Wendy, off Hardscrabble Road.

“At 2:30 a.m. a power line got ripped off the barn,” the younger Livingston said.

Bristol Police Log: Police lead active shooter training for emergency services

BRISTOL — On Oct. 24 two Bristol police officers led a training seminar on active shooter response for Addison County emergency services.

Meanwhile, Bristol police conducted foot patrol downtown on Oct. 23, 24, 25, 26 and 27; on Oct. 25 an officer secured one building. Police foot patrols at Bristol Elementary School and nearby areas took place each day from Oct. 23 to 27; and security checks of Mount Abraham Union High School occurred daily Oct. 23 to 29 except the 27th.

Police offices completed fingerprint requests on Oct. 17, 24, 25 and 27.

ANESU voters reject $36 million Mount Abe building bond

BRISTOL — Addison Northeast Supervisory Union residents on Thursday rejected a $36.6 million renovation plan for Mount Abraham Union High School by a 1,261 to 1,168 tally.

The close, 93-vote margin of defeat has provided project proponents with a silver lining sense that a third vote could be the charm for getting five-town residents to endorse major repairs to their almost 50-year-old secondary school building.

Bristol man charged with child sexual assault

BRISTOL — A 61-year-old Bristol man last week pleaded innocent to a charge that he sexually assaulted a five-year-old girl.

Kendell Ducharme, 61, a registered sex offender, entered the plea to a charge of aggravated sexual assault on a victim younger than 13 in Rutland Superior Court, criminal division, on Wednesday, Nov. 1. He could face 10 years to life in jail and a fine of up to $50,000 if convicted.
