Vergennes Police Log: Another animal shot 'acting strangely'

VERGENNES — Another animal acting strangely was shot in Vergennes last week, this time a skunk in the Ice House Court neighborhood on Jan. 25 by a game warden, but there remains no concrete evidence that the animals emerging recently are diseased, according to Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel.

Merkel on Monday received the results of testing on one animal shot two weeks ago. The chief said he was told the test showed no evidence of rabies, although the official result read the result was “indeterminate.”

Vermont State Police Log: Middlebury man faces heroin trafficking charge

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police jailed a Middlebury man last week on charges that he was trafficking heroin.

On Thursday, Jan. 19, at around 1 p.m., troopers stopped a 2004 Buick Century on Route 7 in the town of Mt. Tabor for speeding. Police report that Scott Racine, 42, of Middlebury was driving the car and 36-year-old Jonathon Gallagher of Rutland was a passenger.

State police alleged that during a search of the vehicle, they found approximately 1,400 bags of heroin.

Vergennes Police Log: City police deal with rabid animals

VERGENNES — Following a number of recent reports in Vergennes of possibly rabid animals, Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel is asking residents to let city police or local game wardens know if they see any animals acting strangely —and to be careful.

In the past two weeks, Vergennes police have shot four animals acting strangely, including raccoons on Jan. 17 and 20, and on Monday were responding to a fifth report.

Middlebury Police Log: Authorities investigate Memorial Sports Center break-in

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police are investigating a report of a burglary at the Memorial Sports Center off Buttolph Drive on Jan. 22.

Police said the culprit(s) forced their way inside to steal an unspecified amount of cash.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Responded to a verbal dispute in the Seymour Street area on Jan. 17.

•  Assisted Middlebury Regional EMS officials with a suicidal patient in the Cross Street area on Jan. 17.

Vt. State Police log: Three drivers attempt to flee from VSP

ADDISON COUNTY — Last week seemed to be the perfect time for young male drivers to crash their cars and hoof it away from the scene before the police arrive; at least that’s what can be gleaned from the recent Vermont State Police reports.

First, on Jan. 10 troopers were notified by an Addison County sheriff’s deputy of a vehicle travelling east on Leicester Whiting Road at an extremely high rate of speed. When the deputy had seen two vehicles racing on Route 30 in Whiting, he activated his emergency blue lights, but only one vehicle pulled over.

Bristol Police log: Police warn locals about their images on web pages

BRISTOL — Bristol police pro-actively reviewed several internet sites known to contain explicit content of local citizens on Jan. 2. A police officer alerted a local citizen that non-explicit images of them had been posted online “in a way that would entice others to post explicit images of the person,” according to a log provided by Chief Kevin Gibbs.

Middlebury Police log: Local man wanted for assaulting officer

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police were on the lookout for 46-year-old Christopher L. Ardell of Middlebury early this week after he failed to appear at a court hearing where he was to be arraigned on several charges of assault — including assaulting a police officer.

Police said it was at around 8:35 p.m. on Jan. 11 that they received a call about a possible domestic disturbance at a Seymour Street apartment. Police interviewed the victim, who alleged she had been assaulted and injured by her partner — Ardell — who was still in the home.

Vt. State Police Log: Man rescued from freezing lake

ADDISON COUNTY — A Charlotte man was pulled from the frigid waters of Lake Champlain near the shores in Ferrisburgh on Sunday afternoon.

Vermont State Police report that Daniel Doyle, 74, was walking on a section of ice approximately 10-15 feet from shore in Town Farm Bay, north of Long Point just off Annex Road. A little before 1:45 p.m., the area of ice that Doyle was walking on broke away, and he became partially submerged in open water.

Bristol Police Log: Vehicle violations, impairments provide action for Bristol police

BRISTOL — At a quarter to 2 a.m. on Dec. 26, a Bristol police officer saw a running vehicle parked in a pull-off on River Road in Lincoln.

The officer looked in and saw that the driver was sleeping and an open container of alcohol was in the center console of the vehicle.

After the officer woke the driver, field sobriety exercises were conducted, which revealed the operator was within the legal limit to drive the vehicle.
